FBI: Men tried to buy bombs for government attack

Remember all the outrage in 2009, when DHS put out a report about the increasing danger of right wing terrorism?

FBI: Men tried to buy bombs for government attack

A second FBI source told agents he had a conversation with Cannon on Feb. 8 during which Cannon said the group planned to "start the fight" with the government by sabotaging power grids, transfer stations and water treatment facilities to create mass hysteria, the agent's statement says. That would push the government to declare martial law, which would push other militias to join the fight.

"Cannon claimed too many militias were in a defensive mode and in order to get them out of the defensive posture, actions would have to take place to force martial law to be declared," the agent's statement said. Cannon also said he wanted to recruit militia members from other parts of the country to join these missions.

Hasn't there been sniper attacks on power stations recently?

According to the article at the link, "The three men participated in online discussions about carrying out an operation against the government in February," and "The online chats were monitored by the FBI."

So you had to wait 5 years for a couple of crackpots to do something stupid to prove that there is really a "threat" out there? Pretty unconvincing.

    .

You need to start the right kind of thread to draw them into a conversation that will attract the NSA's and the FBI's attention.

    Total bloody idiots.

First, you make bombs, you don't buy them.
Second, you do not attack innocents.
Third, Obama and the Dems are not the government, they are a political party. If your views are right-wing and you actually want to see changes, you don't attack "the government", you attack leftist.

It's exactly these kinds of nuts that make it essential that someone with a working brain gets in contact with them and gives them some useful guidance.

As the country continues to become more and more divided over political issues, violence will occur. Someone needs to exert control over and focus that violence, not allow a bunch of random nuts to do stupid things. For now, the FBI has been lucky and were able to catch these nuts before something happened, but if we keep growing the number of nuts, sooner or later, the FBI will fail.

I'm all for eliminating leftist, but not at the cost of dead kids.

So you're the type of folk they were referring to in the DHS report. Good to know we've got eyes on ya.

Maybe you should be reading something more than your favourite blogs

Opinion: Growing threat of extreme right-wing violence - CNN.com

From 2002 to 2007, only nine right-wing extremists were indicted for their roles in politically motivated murders and other types of ideologically motivated violent assaults. But between 2008 and 2012, the number mushroomed to 53, according to data collected by the New America Foundation.

Fifteen right-wing extremists were indicted in 2012 -- including six who were involved in a militia in Georgia that accumulated weapons, plotted attacks on the government and murdered a young U.S. Army soldier and his 17-year-old girlfriend, who they suspected were planning to rat out the group to authorities. Seven claimed membership in the anti-government Sovereign Citizens movement and allegedly murdered two policemen in Louisiana. And two had gone on a murderous rampage the previous year, killing four people before they were arrested in California, where they told police they were on their "way to Sacramento to kill more Jews."

This article provides clarity on the various components of the American far right. It also offers a basic analytical model to better understand its current violent trends. The article’s findings—which are based on a dataset of more than 4,400 cases of violent attacks by far right elements during a 22-year period—will be expanded in a more detailed study that will soon be published by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.
