Sinaloa Cartel chief ‘El Chapo’ captured alive, says U.S. official | Toronto Star

MEXICO CITY—The head of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel was captured overnight by U.S. and Mexican authorities at a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico, The Associated Press has learned.

A senior U.S. law enforcement official said Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was taken alive overnight in the beach resort town. The official was not authorized to discuss the arrest and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Good news and surprising considering it seemed like he had most of the Mexican government in his pocket for awhile.

I would have preferred depriving the man of his income by legalizing drugs. As a second best this is okay though.

Considering this man is responsible for hundreds of murders I would not be satisfied with just that. Especially since he's already massed about a billion dollars last time they estimated.

All those dead and that amassed fortune just because we criminalize drugs. Such a waste.

I agree, at least on some drugs. It doesn't absolve Guzman though.

And such a non-existent connection between two points.

It would seem so. He made a billion dollars while he had a seven million dollar bounty on his head. He had to have had something going for him.

I wonder who will take his place? Surely, no one thinks his capture will be the end of drug smuggling from Mexico do they?

When I was shown the picture today, the clean one, not the one after they beat him, I wondered who was going to fill the void left by him.

I also wonder if my área, which he controlled, will now be out of control because some wild man comes in like one of the Zetas.

Sounds like you're in Mexico.

I'm wondering the same thing, but from a safer distance.

Yes I am in Mexico 2 hours from where Chap lived. He has kept it pretty calm around here and I hope it stays that way.

He controls 1/2 the Mexican govt., as well as a sizable chunk of the US govt. Therefore, he can't be jailed.

Either the arrest is a farce that he perpetuated to create the illusion that he was caught (not difficult to do, since he also has control of much of the Mexican media) so as to keep smaller rival cartels away, OR

it's a minor miscalculation on his part and he will negotiate for his release in a week.

In any case, because of the vast control that drug lords wield over govts. and the media, stories about any of these individuals' arrest can never be trusted.

The reason cocaine, etc. is illegal in the US is because of men like Chapo lobbying US pols to keep it that way

Where are you getting this completely wrong information?

Where are you getting this completely wrong information?

Where are you getting your information? ? From the same media stations in Mexico controlled by Guzman himself? :lamo

I said I don't know what happened and the Mexican media (largely controlled by the cartels themselves) can't be trusted. How is that wrong?

You said

That didfn't sound like you said you didn't know, it sounded pretty positive. Where do you get your information that Chapo owns any government anywhere?

Look for the pictures of him after he was beat and tell me they are going tolet him go.

How do you know it's him? Because the some Mexican police in Sinaloa said so. . ? Because the Mexican attorney general said he had DNA evidence :lamo

It's well known that Chapo and other drug barons bribe officials, so thoroughly that they actually end up controlling 1/2 or more of the govt. of the country in which they have HQ. With that much control, arrest, or at least permanent jail time is impossible.

The more likely scenario is that Chapo cut a deal w/Pena Nieto that he would keep the streets a bit quieter if Nieto set up a mock arrest of him, and lied to the media claiming he was actually the one arrested.

Chapo probably just wanted to be left alone, and playing dead (or arrested) is a nice way to do that. His less noodle-minded rivals will likely buy the Mexican govt's line, just like you did :)

There's no police or members of the armed forces in Mexico anywhere that are independent of the cartels.

And such a non-existent connection between two points.

That is exactly what they said about prohibition, while the thugs grew fat.

Sometimes that seems the only rational conclusion.

We will soon know if you're right or not. I'm going to make a prediction: Should El Chapo wind up in jail, you'll never come back and admit you've got egg all over your face. xxx

Even if he does manage to escape like last time, it might be hard to prove if it was by chance or government assisted.
