Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat[W:600]

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

If true, you are correct. We'll apparently know soon what the truth is, since I have heard nothing either way from VW. If they get tax incentives from the state for expansion, that is a common practice, as Ludin pointed out in his post #367. It does benefit people who would like to have a good job, so I have no problem with that, and it is legally done everywhere.

The problem is they threatened to pull it away if they unionized. That money clearly is coming with strings attached.

Most money comes with strings attached, or the lobbies in DC wouldn't work so hard on their own behalf when dealing with our beloved congress-critters! What else is old news in politics?

I agree and it's corrupt and needs to stop.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Yes, there were strings attached. "Two Republican members of the state Legislature said VW would have a difficult time getting more state incentive money if the workers vote to unionize. "

that had no bearing on the union vote. the majority of people that voted no on the union cited the UAW destruction of the big 3 for their reason not to go with the union.

I didn't say the bribe had influence on the voting. That was to influence the company. Corker influenced the vote by assuring an expansion should the no union vote happen, and the billboards Norquist put up about Dems coming to take their guns away and fear of the Big 3 (which has absolutely nothing to do with VW). Tactics used to scare voters.

Darned free speech! That gets in the way!:lamo

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

The bottom line is that this vote is a death knell for unions in the south, as well as overall union health in the US....What is their participation these days? 7%? And the UAW needed this vote as a gateway to the south, now that is just not going to happen....Workers today don't want the adversarial relationship with management that the union brings anymore....People saw Flint, Lansing, Detroit, and no longer want a bully to ruin their careers.

American unions appear to have a bright future organizing public employees and looking after the interests of their retirees.

the problem with public unions is they hold tax payer dollars hostage. they have huge demands of government that tax payer are on the hook for. there is a conflict of interest.
maybe if the states were making surpluses and profits then that would be different, but they don't. most states are running deficits and only balancing their books by ton's of
cuts but still having to pay for all these huge public union demands.

it is one of the things that brought down detriot was the loss of tax base but public union promises that they couldn't hope to keep.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

....because what he did in his position was unethical.

Yeah, expressing one's opinion is pretty unethical unless, of course, Rachel Maddow approves!

Anyway, ethical or not, Corker's comments were IRRELEVANT. They do not provide an explanation for the UAW's epic defeat.

His threats along with the campaign of lies and fear very well may have had a hand in that decision.

Bull ****. You don't know that for a fact.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Actually he does, since VW had to come out in the press and correct the Lies of Corker, Haslam, the state Legislature and Norquist several times .
Bull ****. You don't know that for a fact.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

See how hurt they are that the Northern states will be going after their plants in the South.
But he's all in when Gov. Perry tours the Northern states on somebody's dime to take our plants.
Start beating the Massachusetts drums for re-pilfering our lost plants from the South .
Does NY say the business gets the money as long as they don't unionize?

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Show me that caviat in TNs agreement

They didn't write it in the agreement. They said if the company unionized it would compromise such monies.

Another poster sited the number one reason the people voted against the union was because they feared it would turn into the big 3.

most plants are going south instead of north. just like a lot of tech firms are coming towards texas than silicon valley.
they are going where it operating costs are better.

gun companies are already pulling out of a lot of states and headed south.
so why would they move back north if they are moving south it makes no sense.
