Volkswagen later denied Corker’s statement that expansion at the plant was dependent on a no-union vote. Other state lawmakers threatened to cut off tax incentives for the plant if workers unionized.

As I already pointed out yesterday, Corker is in a position to be quite a bit more forthright than is VW management. His voters are in TN; their union/government are in Germany. Your link supports my view.:peace

Glad to see UAW get defeated now every single politician who had a hand in the ultimatum needs to be kicked out of office. Government coercion of this nature should be viewed with absolute disdain and horror and we should all have a Zero Tolerance policy for that sort of thing.

What were the benefits of bringing in the union and charging dues supposed to be? To the workers, I mean. The benefits to the UAW are obvious.

What kind of voice in policy do you envision they would have? If the workers in Germany go out on strike, the workers in Tennessee would be expected to join them? Everything else is usually already covered..ie; vacation time, overtime worked, pay scales in the area for the various jobs being done, service milestones, etc. What could the union offer that would be different?

Company policy is not usually made by the workers anyway....Most companies the size of VW usually have a Board of Directors that establish policy, and that commonly includes not only the executives of the company, but executive people from outside the company as well. I don't know how the Tennessee VW hierarchy operates, but since they appear to be a subsidiary of VW Germany, I doubt they make any policies other than those which would be necessary to conform to US law, but I could be mistaken.

The essential piece is that VW Tennessee management acted to promote VW's interests in Germany while retaining the non-union flexibility that brought the company to TN in the first place.:peace

First, a council cannot go on strike against an employer in Europe so it's a non sequitur. Employees only have a say in wages and working condition through collective bargaining. A popular thing work councils do is determine wage on amount of production which benefits both the business and workers. Work councils have a democratic voice in decision in a variety of things including product. Workers who want to be more vested will have an opportunity which is a win for employer and employee alike.

Okay, let's put the shoe on the other foot. If VW Tennessee is unionized at some point in the future, and the workers decide to go on strike, wouldn't they expect their union brethren in Germany to also go on strike to show solidarity? How would the council handle that problem? And what happens in the case of German national Holidays? Would the Tennessee workers expect to have the same time off with pay, since they're all working for the same company?

No, because German work councils work separate from the unions. Also, it wouldn't make sense for a company based in the US to negotiate German holidays. The USA union has absolutely no affiliation with the a German ones.

I was thinking about the German union considering an attempt to try to unionize VW Tennessee on their own, since they are apparently disappointed/angry with the UAW, as was mentioned in yesterday's news. I have to sign off now since I have company, but I'll look for your response tomorrow, if you choose to make one. :peace:

The bottom line is that this vote is a death knell for unions in the south, as well as overall union health in the US....What is their participation these days? 7%? And the UAW needed this vote as a gateway to the south, now that is just not going to happen....Workers today don't want the adversarial relationship with management that the union brings anymore....People saw Flint, Lansing, Detroit, and no longer want a bully to ruin their careers.
