Until you are able to explain exactly what coming out "ahead of the game" actually means, then I suspect the answer to your question is no. Does anyone really have a clear idea of what victory in Iraq or Afghanistan might have looked like? If you don't know what it is you are fighting for then how could you know when you've achieved it?
That's the main problem with the limited wars. What is it all about? What is the objective? If we don't know where we're going, how do we know when we get there?
Perhaps one day the Mid East will become peaceful and prosperous. Europe did, after all, after having fought among themselves for centuries, perhaps the same can happen in the Mid East.
But, thinking we can speed up the process by invading this nation or that with no clear idea what we're about isn't going to help.
