I knew that something just wasn't right about the guy when I saw how he left all those busses just sitting, instead of using them to evacuate people from hurricane Katrina... But I had now idea that he was also on the take.

Ex-New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin found guilty of corruption

A jury convicted former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Wednesday on 20 of 21 federal corruption counts, including bribery, marking a stunning fall for the feisty official who gained a national profile following Hurricane Katrina.
The 57-year-old Democrat, who led his city through the aftermath of the 2005 storm, was found guilty of charges that he accepted bribes, free trips and other gratuities from contractors in exchange for helping them secure millions of dollars in city work while he was in office.

The charges against Nagin included one overarching conspiracy count along with six counts of bribery, nine counts of wire fraud, one count of money laundering conspiracy and four counts of filing false tax returns. He was acquitted of one of the bribery counts.

Each charges carries a sentence from 3 to 20 years, but how long he would serve was unclear and will depend on a pre-sentence investigation and various sentencing guidelines. No sentencing date was set.

Prosecutors say he took hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of bribes including money, free travel and granite for Stone Age LLC, a family granite business.

They allege the corruption spanned the time before and after Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005.

I remember seeing him being interviewed time and again around Katrina. Although 'first impressions' are sorry lots, I have to say I'm not one little bit surprised. I thought I saw "ka-chings" in his eyes.

Good find, Grim, thanks. Not sure I would have seen this otherwise.

Chocolate City weeps.

Laisse le bon temps rouler!!!

(Let the good times roll!)

Yep, no surprises here. NO politics is just about as corrupt as it can be.

Louisiana Politics probably rivals Chicago's in corruption. The big difference is the dead don't vote in Louisiana.

Greetings, Pero. :2wave:

Did he ever explain why he decided to let the empty school buses sit while residents were frantically trying to escape the flooding caused by Katrina, and many died? With all the charges of corruption against him, and the lengths of time to be served on each of them, he apparently won't escape his fate either. I believe in the fairness of Karma, as you have probably surmised!

Not that I know of. No explanation at all why the school buses were left just sitting. Yes, in a way it is Karma.

In case anyone thinks Fox is lying. Sure is quiet in here.

I am sure that the conviction is all just because Nagin is black....

Has ever a non-corrupt politician come from New Orleans or Chicago?

New Orleans politics, perhaps. But you can't use New Orleans to judge the entire state. New Orleans is it's own little world.

I distinctly remember at that time people lashing out at GW Bush because he wouldn't let federal resources come under the control and command of Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco. Although the people of New Orleans and surrounding areas suffered, it was probably a wise move.

I'd be worried about your own state if I was you. If you think no one ever gets charged for corruption in Texas because corruption doesn't exist I have a lot of things I'd like to sell you.

Bush knew that if he let Nagin and Blanco run the show, things would have gone to **** in about 5 minutes.

Yeah, just like Atlanta is its own little world in the state of Georgia. I got you.

This is the guy who cried about not getting help from Bush. More likely he was crying because he wasn't getting a kickback from Bush.

Meanwhile, the citizens of New Orleans suffered.

Just another crooked politician in a very long line.... I don't agree about him being naive, apparently that was his defense. Lesson for all those aspiring crooked politicians... don't let the trail lead to you directly.

I wonder who blew the whistle and why it took so long?

Would it be racist if I mentioned Kwame Kilpatrick, former Mayor of Detroit, currently service 28 years in federal prison for similar dedication to the people of his city?

Of course it would. For future reference, ANY mention of a black person breakng the law is racist. Period!

Notice how the Libbos aren't swoopin' in cheering that they convicted this crooked bastard?

Maybe Ray Nagin can bunk with his old pal William Jefferson, currently serving 13 yrs in federal prison for public corruption. But that's probably racist too - never mind.

Is he the one that kept his money in the freezer?
