All-American college football player Michael Sam says he is gay

True enough.

I'd love to go through and dissect this, but I don't have the time. But, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said "The reality is, right or wrong, our media and our public is going to mindlessly pound the drums of this story till kingdom come because it transcends politicsl into social and political issues. That's not the case with a guy getting drunk and running down a pedestrian. And as such, there's going to be a lot more media distractions for the former than there is for the latter. And when it comes down to football decisions, that makes it a bigger negative." Indeed it does. And, I think almost all Americans would agree those actions are wrong, but there's a divide in America that argues whether or not homosexuality is wrong and that's what we're witnessing.

It's all about the sensationalism. That's what "journalism" is now.

The whole "coming out" thing is just strange to me. Does liking intercourse with men require an announcement from anyone? Does it serve a purpose? Is it anyone's business? Should anyone be concerned one way or the other? Isn't it the point that people should be able to keep their private lives private?
You can't possibly believe this makes sense. You understand he announced it because someone else was going to. I wish that it was considered normal to be attracted to people of the same sex but it is a story because if nothing is said it is assumed that he would be straight.

I don't remember Dirk Nowitzky "coming out" to tell people he liked black women before he married a black woman. I don't remember James Carville "coming out" before he married a staunch conservative. A gay man should have to announce he likes gay men to be with gay men. We all have the right to whatever in that regard.

Funny you should say that about Dirk, you think he wouldn't have had to hide that 50 years ago?

I understand why Michael Sam did it. Someone was about go public with it, and he wanted to control the message, which he's done just fine. People need to mind their own business.

Yes so join me in supporting marriage for people who want to marry someone of the same sex.

But overall, this constant crush of media pressure to "normalize" homosexuality is, if anything, beginning to turn straight people off more. It's not normal. Perfectly legal, and not of any great concern or business of mine, but it ain't normal. Buy a Biology book. The media seems hell-bent on it purely and solely for the purpose of needling heterosexuals, particularly those of a conservative or religious slant. There's nothing really substantive to it otherwise.

So here is the real thing. It is important to you to hide homosexuality because you think it isn't normal. As for the biology book you should read one that shows homosexuality is normal and frankly pretty common in the animal kingdom. But it is the height of irony to say, "why should anyone care?" and then say "It's not normal". hmmmm

Meanwhile, there's this codependent need among some gays to be acknowledged as "courageous" and receive some sort of reality celebrity spotlight from it all. As if having sex with a man is akin to climbing Mount Everest or something. There's nothing admirable or courageous about being gay. Sorry.

There is when the world amplifies bigotry.....

Rant over.
I doubt it.

Most homosexual activists want #1 in a big way, especially the spending money part. Because spending money is power. And power is the real objective.
How bizarre. Something tells me you're shooting from the hip here.

This should not be considered news. I am all for gay rights. I have nothing in any way against this young man being true about himself. But it shouldn't matter. The media has no business here. Yes, he is gay. Yes, he might be the first active gay NFL player if drafted. But that does not make him any different. We need to stop polarizing this argument by making it so in your face.

Can you imagine if instead of announcing it he simply showed a little normal modest public affection to whoever his current squeeze is and just let the chips fall where they may? Conservatives (perhaps even some Moderates) would still be saying "He's shoving it down our throats". Now at least he will be left to act reasonably normal in public with his boyfriend(s), while finding out whether or not he can have a career in the field that he loves.

This issue is polarized by the intolerant, not the people hammering out the road to normalcy.

Don't forget the "What else is he hiding?" questions too.

The reason non-famous people "come out" is because they just can't bear the thought of giving their loved one a peck on the cheek when saying good bye will be met with shock and dismay by any of their family. They come out because it is easier than dealing with completely closed minded jerks when they have to announce that they are bringing their boyfriend home for Thanksgiving. It is a kindness both to themselves and to their family to deal with things in stages.

It is absolutely pathetic that you think YOU are put upon by the process. Not by a long shot.

I think Sam could have avoided this entire madness if he simply taken the time to consult with Tim Tebow concerning how to be gay in the NFL. :monkey

What teams are looking for kickers?

What advise could Tim Tebow give about being IN the NFL? ;)

I won't post it here because it is very NSFW, but Gilbert Gottfried did a hilarious rant about this and how Tebow should be the first gay player. It is on Youtube "The Burn: Gay Players in the NFL"

...just look around this site at the LGBT threads.

I think this is a very positive step forward in the LGBT fight for complete acceptance.

I think the T's should stop riding on the coat tails of the L G & B's. Everyone loves the L's, the G's you can take or leave, the B's it depends what sex they are, but the T's. No one likes the T's. They are always an afterthought. Someone just tagged the T to the LGB and it seems to have stuck

I say lets decouple the T from the LGB. I don't like the idea of trying to take away all of our sexual predjudices in one fell swoop. It is not the American way. In reality we should just give them up one at a time. I realise it would be difficult to give up predjudices against the L's without also giving them up for the G's. If you have given them up for the L's and the G's the B's don't give you much to hang your hat on, so I can see why they are lumped in with the other two.

But I still think we could give equal rights to the LGB communities and still hang on to our predjudices to the T's for a while longer.

All in favor? :)

I agree we should decouple the Ts from the LGBs. consider, is a T really LG or B? If you are male but think you should have been female and you are attracted to guys, are you really gay? If you are female and think you should have been male and are attracted to females, are you really lesbian?

take Chaz Bono as an example. lesbian chasity was living with her lesbian girl friend. chasity becomes Chaz and lesbian GF breaks up with "him" because.....she's a lesbian and isn't attracted to guys, which Chaz now is.....

I think they choose to band together because the hatred toward them is very similar, often from very similar sources. The gays and the trans are about accepting people for who they are and their right to live their life, so there is common ground there.

You'd think they'd find common ground with Libertarians, but too many claimants to that title are really "Republitarians."

While this perhaps should get its own thread as it has as much to do with general bullying (and i don't even know if the target is gay), here is even more proof of how neanderthal the nfl remains: The worst of the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin report - SBNation.com

"Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey began regularly calling Martin a "****," a "bitch," a "*****" and a "faggot.""

"During the 2012 Christmas season, Coach Turner gave all of the offensive linemen gift bags that included a variety of stocking stuffers. In each gift bag except for Player A's, Turner included a female "blow-up" doll; Player A's bag included a male doll. Martin and another player were surprised that Turner did this; Martin further said that he was offended that Turner had endorsed the humiliating treatment of Player A by participating in it. Incognito and others agreed that this incident with Coach Turner occurred. When interviewed, Turner was asked if he gave Player A a male blow-up doll. He replied, "I can't remember." We do not believe that Turner forgot this incident, which many others recalled."

I just did. Like I just wrote, we can't discuss the issue if you simply ignore what I write here

except for the fact that he is now openly gay. And allowing him to shower with the other players is something we would not accept if we were discussing a female player. So clearly it's a double standard.

But that is ok, because it's a rather trite and unimportant issue.

because homosexuality is something we are just coming to terms with. Really, why do you think it's such a hotly debated issue and constantly in the news?

I saw this fail analogy somewhere else: that football players should be able to enter the dallas cheerleaders' locker room if gays can enter the football team's. Well!

What is the point of that exactly? Unlike with the cheerleaders, in a team locker room, coaching goes on, very gay-looking activity by supposedly heterosexual men goes on, clearly serious stuff that ought to be valued more than the individual's right to participate on an athletic team /s

There is *no way* unless he has a death wish that michael sam is going to be groping 50 of his teammates in the shower, or whatever the unspoken fear is. One-two small cheerleaders or even a handful in there with an nfl team, i would not bet on their safety. That's the difference. Not to mention that unless there's a female on the team, she simply doesn't belong naked in the locker room with them.

I don't know why you would shun your teammate but for god sakes, if it's such a *huge* deal like some are making it, put up shower curtains! This novel technology. These excuses are so pathetic, identical to what the military fell back on and it's really just about keeping the gays out of sports.

Well his missouri team didn't seem to have a problem with it all year, my intramural doesn't have a problem, the dorm floor didn't, what possible excuse does the nfl have left?
