They are carrying long range sam missiles, and helicopters. Id say thats a threat, professor.

Maybe my knowledge on international law and protocol is lacking, but don't you have to actually be at war with a country before you just willy nilly blow their ships to smithereens?

Unless they deliberately come within range of engaging our nation and make some kind of indication of possible hostility they are not a threat in the context requiring a violent response...or in the case of apdst's suggestion, a preemptive strike.

Merely being an armed naval vessel on the water doesn't mean they are an actual threat. You make a very poor argument.

Not all threats require a violent response-you got that much right. That said, this isnt the merchant marine, its an openly hostile naval force.

I dont need to make any arguments, they are being watched right now, probably by several submarines they dont know are there (but should suspect are). We probably know what time of day the captains take a ****.

I saw a photo of their small destroyer and it was literally, pitiful and rusty.

They could launch "Operation Swine Flew" and air drop some rotting pig carcasses on board their ships. That'll get them the hell outta there.

It's not like they're about to commit suicide. What could they possibly do?

My guess is it's a demonstration, further to their nascent nuclear program. Their inferiority complex is still being hashed out behind closed doors. Not that they'll expect to be intimidating. It's just a little 'here we are' so to speak.

Rusty or not, they are mobile platforms for some pretty dangerous weapons. We have better-but thats not point.

I doubt the concept of a follow-up ground invasion escapes them. Nor the more probable scenario of Israeli jets. You know those guys are itching for it. Iran won't do ****.

I don't think Obama wants conflict with Iran and Iran would be stupid to start something. I not concerned exceot maybe the crew of the Iranian ships getting lost, running out of fuel and running out of food. It honestly would not surprise me if they did make it over to this part of the world, somebody would have to give them assistance, food supplies and help getting back to Iran.
