Iran sending warships close to US borders[W:623]

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

This thread has made me laugh! The hysteria of some folks about Iran venturing out into international waters with two pathetic boats really did give me a good chuckle! I've seen decommissioned warships in Long Beach more fearsome than the photo of what looks like a long, skinny fishing boat with a canon. Clearly, my maritime expertise is nearly non-existent, but please... "What if they attack us????"

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

Must be you skipped right over my elaboration. Here it is:

How do you figure, exactly, that the opposition leadership was the least bit interested in our assistance? Even if they were, it would've destroyed their credibility.

What dont you understand here? Its well documented that many of these protesters asked for US assistance, the "leadership" consisted of different groups and individuals, it wasn't a monolithic group. And in any case, DESTROYED THEIR CREDIBILITY TO WHOM? The repressive regime?

Stop making excuses, its pathetic. Do you ever get tired of defending the president?

The most plausible scenario I've heard is that if Iran did try to attack they would use an EMP burst to disable the grid, then try to land ground troops. That would be an absolutely stupid plan, if they land in the south they won't make it past us without massive casualties, a lot of patriots that track game with way more advantages than a human, if they attack the east or west there are tons of military bases and mobilization wouldn't be a problem. Either way they would need an entire new military if they tried it.

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

A new surface-to-surface missile, named the Nour, was test fired from the Jamaran destroyer in March 2010.
Launched in the waters of the Persian Gulf, the test was successful with the missile having hit its target from a distance of 100km. Iran is also planning to build an upgraded missile with a 300km range.
Jamaran / Mowj Class Multi-Purpose Guided Missile Frigate - Naval Technology

it is a warship, it has to be tracked - coming around the Cape of Good Hope, and not thru the Mediterranean to avoid the choke points, and the US 6th fleet Mediterranean.

Oh, well, since you responded to my rather specific post with a wonderfully vague and non-specific response, of course you must be right. The Iranian Green Movement was led in large part by Mousavi, who had challenged Ahmadinejad in the election and who believed that the landslide result in favor of Ahmadinejad was fraudulent. Mousavi was one of several principal players in the 2009 protests that traced his roots back to the Revolution.

And in any case, DESTROYED THEIR CREDIBILITY TO WHOM? The repressive regime?

To the opposition in part and to Iran in general. It would've been like an accusation of national election fraud and widespread GOP demonstrations in 2012 resulting in Vladamir Putin sending Russian troops or even supplies in to support the GOP.

Stop making excuses, its pathetic. Do you ever get tired of defending the president?

I'm not making excuses for anyone, I'm pointing out how the situation was far more complex than many seem to think it was. While the United States likes the idea of proper democratic reforms in Iran, and while the Iranian Green Movement liked the idea of proper democratic reforms in Iran, this did not make the Iranian Green Movement a friend to the United States and it did not mean that our help would've either been welcome or, well, helpful.

Mornin' LMR. :2wave: I would hope people really don't think Iran is making any other move than a game of brinksmanship. They know Congress still wants to impose sanctions. But Iran also knows those Europeans have those billions invested into their country. Its another reason why the play like they do.

Iran also knows there is nothing we can do to them if they are international waters.....to do so would create an incident where if they do nothing wrong and are attacked by us, it would be an act of War. Unprovoked.

Yes they figure our President is weak and so to any other leaders.....which is also why they are sending these ships.

Does any think for one moment if none of the sanctions were removed, and they didn't get that money open up to them. That they would have sent a couple ships around to scope our coast with a training exercise?

Also since they are with the BRIC Nation.....I don't think they will have any trouble finding a port to pull into while in the western hemisphere.

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

The last things these guys will see is the US in total war.

Mornin' USC. :2wave: Yeah.....I doubt we will ever wipe anyone out and off the face of the earth. We wouldn't do it.....even if it was the only answer and Right thing to do.

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

In fact, the Cook is a very special kind of guided missile destroyer. It's the first of four of America's "DDGs" to be outfitted with a new version of the Aegis anti-aircraft defense system, specially designed to shoot down ballistic missiles.
And it represents the vanguard of America's new Europe-based Ballistic Missile Defense -- a $22 billion, decades-long project to defend against missile strikes from a nuclear-armed Iran.

Based out of Rota, these four vessels will run rotating patrol assignments -- two ships on patrol, two in port
Combined with a pair of on-land anti-ballistic missile defense sites to be built in Romania and Poland, Cook will constitute a permanent presence in Europe, guaranteeing the continent's safety against missile strikes by rogue regimes.

America's Fleet of Missile-Destroying Warships Has Set Sail for Europe, and It's Making Russia Nervous

Great article, Iran is spending a lot of money for it's "imperial fleet" for no strategic reason. Based off the coast of Spain.

I think that if the Obama administration does not sink them the impeachment proceedings are due.

In military terms, do you have a clue what "probe" means?

The republicans don't want to impeach a lame duck, until they get at least a few top contenders ready for the next election. Biden would probably love it though seeing that as his only real chance at being Chief.

so...just for fun...what justification do you offer for sinking vessels sailing in international waters? And based on your logic, should we be subject to having out vessels attacked when they are in say the Persian Gulf?

Re: Iran sending warships close to US borders

That guy looks like he's got an old Enfield 303. Nothing to laugh at.

I noticed the same thing.

Well the Canadian Navy at least picked a good weapon to arm their fleet with.

I remember some years ago when "Guns and Ammo" ran an article, what was the best infantry rifle ever produced ?

It wasn't the AK-47 or M-16 and not even the M-1 Garand. :thinking

It came down to the finish line all three nose to nose, the 8 MM Kar M-98 Mauser, 303 Enfield and the 30-06 03 Springfield.

The final decision was, the M-98 Mauser was a damn good hunting rifle.

The 03 Springfield was probably the best target rifle ever produced.

But the 303 Enfield was a true combat infantry rifle and won.

I had a sporterized one for years I loved. It was excellent. I finally sold it to a fellow that just had to have it. I have a few 30.06's, but they just aren't quite the same as that old thing was, and still is, I'm sure. That 303 was the best all around rifle I've ever owned. If I find another in good shape some time, I may just have to get it in spite of the predictable, "Haven't you spent enough money on guns?" To which I always reply, "And how much do those horses cost, since we're talking money here?" It's a very cheap and dirty shot that works every time. I hate myself sometimes.

I have an uncle who was a professional hunter during the 50's, 60's and early 70's. He was a hunting guide up in the Northern Woods in Wisconsin but also a contract hunter who would hunt down mountain lions and bears that were causing trouble. He would be hired by states fish and game and ranchers throughout America and Canada.

He wasn't a gun nut but a professional and only owned one high power rifle, a sporterized WW ll surplus 303 Enfield.

It used to be, we'd have a President who would speak out and support any group who wanted freedom, but thats no longer the case with the chump in chief.

Id like to point out that the US had a missle shield in Poland set up to perform this function (with more effective land-based defensive weaponry) and the chump in chief cancelled the project.
