Rainbow Flag Will Fly Over Montreal City Hall During Olympics

If your local law enforcement passed laws forbidding you and your wife from holding hands in public, would holding hands anyhow somehow cheapen the act itself and the affection behind it? Or were you and your partner thrust into the political arena through no choice of your own?

Back when I was in high school, a boy and girl couldn't hold hands. Yep I got suspended for three days for holding hands with my girlfriend. So did she.

You couldn't even kiss on campus. So we just assumed you couldn't have sex on campus either.

We only had one known gay on campus and he wasn't that concerned with the no holding hands rule. His nickname was Buttman.

I agree. The gay community is what, 1.3% of the population? One that "just wants to be equal" but seem to want a whole lot more than 1.3% of the spotlight. It's getting annoying actually. We get it, your gay. Good for you. Now can we get back to everything else?

So why don't you just offer the same protections others have and be done with it. The gay population is 3% but probably higher and growing.

The law is used to arrest homosexuals and allow LGBT activists to be dehumanized.

so your real problem is how russia deals with activists who disagree with the government IN GENERAL, not just for this specific issue. they don't allow peaceful protests against ANY law, not just this one. so nothing special there.

and if there is a gay person in russia who is in jail JUST for being gay then that is outrageous and wrong. I just haven't heard of any such cases. Feel free to enlighten me.

Well Russia doesn't exactly have a trustworthy justice system, I can guarantee every person charged under this unjust law are being arrested for being gay. That is the purpose of the law.

Flying the LGBT flag instead of the city/province/Canadian flag is making a point because of the Olympics.

we're going in circles here: I understand they are making a statement. My point is that this statement seems nothing more than an empty feel good measure.

How do you take that from my post and how does protesting discrimination or persecution amount to being drama queens?

Because it's not my issue. I'm more concerned with things like Constitutional rights and trying to stay ahead of an anti business administration.

But it is an issue that needs to be solved. Just support passing it then.

In America it started out that the gay community just wanted states to get rid of their sodomy laws. They said that's all they wanted, nothing more.

So it happened.

Then eventually they wanted the whole nine yards.

So it happened.

Now they want more than the whole nine yards.

The cities of St. John's, Quebec City, and Montreal will fly the rainbow LGBT flag to protest the treatment of gays in Russia for the duration of the Olympics in Sochi.

This article can be found at the Montreal Gazette.

I hope more cities will choose to protest the anti-gay laws in Russia by doing this. Hopefully we can get more Canadian cities to do it as well as some American cities. Do you think that your/nearest city would raise the LGBT flag?

Fly the American flag with 13 stars. It's the ultimate symbol of freedom and liberty. That way everyone, who's rights are being oppressed and not just one politically correct group.

You can also fly the Canadian flag, it represents freedom as well, even for those groups that did not have freedom under the 13 stars and for homosexuals.

Wanna trade? I could use some help getting a bunch of asshats to understand that SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED is pretty damned simple and is not open to discussion.

There wouldn't be a giant political issue about this if conservatives would just support gay rights. If it is not a big deal why not just support it?

I feel the same way about infringement. BTW few years back there was a referendum vote on gay marriage here in Georgia. It was on the ballot with a bunch of other stuff and I did support it. How do you feel about open carry?

I suspect if a state capital flew a flag over it with an AR15 on it in support of the 2nd amendment there would be folks that would berserk.

I personally do not support any kind of carry, preferring to keep our status-quo.

I don't think Putin gives a flying **** about Canada's pretty flag. And not too awfully long ago, the US looked a lot like Russia regarding this topic. It's taken a lot of pain and suffering on the part of the LGBT community, as well as a lot of pushing against the other 90% to get to where they are now. It's not like anything was given them, or like America has something to brag about regarding this. There were plenty of countries ahead of us (that I recall were criticized) and there will be countries coming along after us. There was no openly gay participants at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, CA and no rainbow flags.

its a nice gesture but id like to see more

what SHOULD be done is going forward in the future any country that has such bigoted laws should simply be ineligible for the olympics

I do on my ranch.

So no trade then? I carry daily. Fly whatever flag you like, I can't see it from here anyway. But Putin is not going to be unimpressed with a flag in Canada. If you really want to make a statement go to Russia and fly it there.

I was not aware that the Olympics was a gay advocacy program. Isn't it about physical ability?
