As a hockey player that has played in many tournaments (as a US player) I understand all that, but it still makes no sense as to why a small portion chooses to speak French when the rest of the country speaks English.

I also don't understand how or why you bow to the queen either - I view that as a weakness. In reality the United States is your best friend. It's almost like NE Canada holds a grudge against the US.

I suppose our culture could influence you but - you're your own nation and you can legislate how you see fit. IMO, the United States shouldn't have any influence on that. As a matter of fact Canadian politicians should look at the US and use us as "lab rats" to determine what legislation works and what legislation doesn't work.. lol

We're your friends but you're still a sovereign nation..... Quite frankly our laws are similar and I don't really see much of a difference between Canada and the US anyways as far as culture.... It's not exactly like I would look any different in Chicago than I would in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto etc..... Sure maybe in Montreal or Quebec City but that's about it...

Quebec was a Country before Canada was, IIRC.
The history between the French and British in war over here in North America is not too pretty.
First the British Colonies fought the French, then they were saved by the French.
Then the French had a revolution that some would like to have here.
Those who like state's rights should appreciate the "rights" of a "PROVINCE" to be expressed, since they are greater than what states have .

Quebec speaks French due to it's history as A French colony while the rest of the country was controlled by the British. It is part of their heritage most of their ancestors are French. To further understand it you have to understand the Quiet Revolution of the 60s, before that francophones (whose schools and almost all services were provided by the Catholic Church) were an oppressed minority in Quebec being by ruled by an Anglophone elite and a premier that was more of a dictator. During the quiet revolution the Quebec Liberals gained control of the government and started reforms to bring equality to the languages groups in Quebec and secularism. Anglophones are still on average wealthier than francophones on Quebec. Today the anglophones vote almost 100% for the Liberals. Westmount a primarily Anglophone and the wealthiest riding in Quebec voted 90% for the Liberals. Most of the activists during the Quiet Revolution went on to become major players in the federal Liberal Party and two of them became prime minsters. Quebec also produced Brian Mulroney and Anglophone and our Progressive Conservatives prime minster in the late 80s.

Now onto the anti-Americanism. It was the 70s and the energy crisis that has caused the anti-Americans sentiment, on op of that Quebec is a very Liberal bordering on social democrat province and they view Americans as even more far-right than the rest of Canada does. An interesting fact is that George Bush Sr. was and still is friends with many prominent Quebeckers including Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien.

I can elaborate more if you want.

States in the U.S. have more control and in Canada all residual power lies with the federal government.

Our economy largely relies on the U.S. and several Canadian companies are rather big in the U.S. like TD (Toronto-Dominion) Bank. We do you use you as lab rats which is how we ended up with our constitution, some social services, and regulatory legislation. The main cultural difference is politics with Canada being much more liberal than the United States.

I'll always be trying to lower that amount of state control on most issues, like voting.

We do need the question-and-answer period once a week,
with Mr. Obama facing the House on a Tuesday and face the Senate on a Wednesday.

Our Congress needs to go back to working FIVE days a week, not 3/4 .

Yes I read books too, however expanding on common knowledge is moot.

Well the u.S> seems to cause all the world's financial issues due to poor regulation which Canada instituted long ago.

Yes, hence Canada is nothing more than an extension of the US, which is why Canada's military is the only military on earth allowed to fly into US airspace.

Good, maybe you can do us a favor and explain how awful socialized healthcare is to the idiots promoting it. Maybe this time you can be the lab rat..

Oh yeah, regulations are awful (the majority of which are in place to generate revenue for our government, which in turn go to social services, which are massively abused.
