Rainbow Flag Will Fly Over Montreal City Hall During Olympics

And yet some people don't believe governments pander to gays (or sexual preference)?

This is not an issue governments should be dealing with, North America is going to **** and these clowns are embracing sexuality????

It really goes to show how ****ing dumb some politicians actually are and what their priorities and agendas are.

I'm also sure there are plenty of gay people that find flying that flag is in bad taste - considering it has no meaning other than "we support gays" which IMO, is pretty biased as well considering that flag excludes a lot of people and doesn't speak for a nation - just a bunch of delusional politicians that make a living sparking controversy and focusing on social issues rather than real issues such as economy.

In short I find flying the flag ignorant - it's just as bad as some schools in California flying the Mexican flag above the United States flag.

We passed same-sex marriage a decade ago and a majority of the population supports it. We are protesting Russia.

From news stories I understand that some Canadian politicians have been hitting the pipe. The crack pipe that is.

That's not how you "protest Russia."

The logical way to protest Russia is by boycotting the Olympics...

Flying a "rainbow flag" just makes Canada look, passive, stupid and weak.

As far as I'm concerned flying that rainbow flag pretty much implies that all Canadians are gay or support gay marriage at the minimum, and that is just wrong.

Yes sir, they certainly do love their crack up there in Toronto.

But I believe this whole gay flag nonsense thing is happening in Quebec - an area of North America where many of it's own Canadian citizens cant even speak English so .... Quebec has always been an arrogant providence - their refusal to learn English is just one example. They think they're better and more sophisticated than everyone else up there. They also don't like the US either.

The French Canadians are nothing but Canadian frogs. :blah:

Toronto is doing ti as well against the wishes of Rob Ford. We are a bilingual country as numerous statues and the constitution says, Quebec and part of Ontario and New Brunswick speak French and they have right to. Quebec also has fairly large Anglophone population. In order to understand Quebec you have to know it's history.

I wouldn't exactly call it bilingual considering many don't speak English which is bizarre considering the majority of Canadians speak English and English is their first language.

I have no problem with them speaking French, however I do find it arrogant how some refuse to learn to speak English.

What, do they believe they're too good to speak English? or are they just lazy or stupid?

Canada as a country and New Brunswick are officially bilingual. Quebec's official language is French but most government services are available in English, the opposite happens in Ontario my IDs are all in both languages. Most English speakers refuse to learn French. Well Quebeckers don't need to learn English for the same treason the French or English don't, they can get everything they need in their own language. Quebec is trying to teach more English, it was of the goals of the Charest Liberal government.

Also, one question I would love to ask the Canadians posting here is why are Canadians so obsessed with US politics in the first place?

I know this topic is about Canada er Quebec but I just don't understand why you even care about US politics... Is the political atmosphere in Canada just that boring?

No offense to any Canadian posting here I just find it baffling...

Well actually yes when there is not an election or controversial legislation (kind of rare) it gets rather boring and also the U.S. is just one of the biggest and most influential countries in the world that we happen to be next to and has great influence on our country.

As a hockey player that has played in many tournaments (as a US player) I understand all that, but it still makes no sense as to why a small portion chooses to speak French when the rest of the country speaks English.

I also don't understand how or why you bow to the queen either - I view that as a weakness. In reality the United States is your best friend. It's almost like NE Canada holds a grudge against the US.

I suppose our culture could influence you but - you're your own nation and you can legislate how you see fit. IMO, the United States shouldn't have any influence on that. As a matter of fact Canadian politicians should look at the US and use us as "lab rats" to determine what legislation works and what legislation doesn't work.. lol

We're your friends but you're still a sovereign nation..... Quite frankly our laws are similar and I don't really see much of a difference between Canada and the US anyways as far as culture.... It's not exactly like I would look any different in Chicago than I would in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto etc..... Sure maybe in Montreal or Quebec City but that's about it...

Quebec was a Country before Canada was, IIRC.
The history between the French and British in war over here in North America is not too pretty.
First the British Colonies fought the French, then they were saved by the French.
Then the French had a revolution that some would like to have here.
Those who like state's rights should appreciate the "rights" of a "PROVINCE" to be expressed, since they are greater than what states have .

Quebec speaks French due to it's history as A French colony while the rest of the country was controlled by the British. It is part of their heritage most of their ancestors are French. To further understand it you have to understand the Quiet Revolution of the 60s, before that francophones (whose schools and almost all services were provided by the Catholic Church) were an oppressed minority in Quebec being by ruled by an Anglophone elite and a premier that was more of a dictator. During the quiet revolution the Quebec Liberals gained control of the government and started reforms to bring equality to the languages groups in Quebec and secularism. Anglophones are still on average wealthier than francophones on Quebec. Today the anglophones vote almost 100% for the Liberals. Westmount a primarily Anglophone and the wealthiest riding in Quebec voted 90% for the Liberals. Most of the activists during the Quiet Revolution went on to become major players in the federal Liberal Party and two of them became prime minsters. Quebec also produced Brian Mulroney and Anglophone and our Progressive Conservatives prime minster in the late 80s.

Now onto the anti-Americanism. It was the 70s and the energy crisis that has caused the anti-Americans sentiment, on op of that Quebec is a very Liberal bordering on social democrat province and they view Americans as even more far-right than the rest of Canada does. An interesting fact is that George Bush Sr. was and still is friends with many prominent Quebeckers including Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien.

I can elaborate more if you want.

States in the U.S. have more control and in Canada all residual power lies with the federal government.

Our economy largely relies on the U.S. and several Canadian companies are rather big in the U.S. like TD (Toronto-Dominion) Bank. We do you use you as lab rats which is how we ended up with our constitution, some social services, and regulatory legislation. The main cultural difference is politics with Canada being much more liberal than the United States.

I'll always be trying to lower that amount of state control on most issues, like voting.

We do need the question-and-answer period once a week,
with Mr. Obama facing the House on a Tuesday and face the Senate on a Wednesday.

Our Congress needs to go back to working FIVE days a week, not 3/4 .

Yes I read books too, however expanding on common knowledge is moot.

Well the u.S> seems to cause all the world's financial issues due to poor regulation which Canada instituted long ago.

Yes, hence Canada is nothing more than an extension of the US, which is why Canada's military is the only military on earth allowed to fly into US airspace.

Good, maybe you can do us a favor and explain how awful socialized healthcare is to the idiots promoting it. Maybe this time you can be the lab rat..

Oh yeah, regulations are awful (the majority of which are in place to generate revenue for our government, which in turn go to social services, which are massively abused.

I don't think Putin gives a flying **** about Canada's pretty flag. And not too awfully long ago, the US looked a lot like Russia regarding this topic. It's taken a lot of pain and suffering on the part of the LGBT community, as well as a lot of pushing against the other 90% to get to where they are now. It's not like anything was given them, or like America has something to brag about regarding this. There were plenty of countries ahead of us (that I recall were criticized) and there will be countries coming along after us. There was no openly gay participants at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, CA and no rainbow flags.
So French Canadians are flying a gay flag in protest of a Russian policy, and somehow you had to find a way to tear down the US over it? I can't even begin to describe how twisted and ****ed up that is.

Well we love our single-payer system in fact Quebec has the best healthcare in the country and most of the research to. We have more regulations than you because what not regulating did to the U.S., the collapse in 2008 could not have happened in Canada and we passed environmental legislation before you and believe it or not it was our Conservatives who did it. We have our own identity and we are proud of it.

None of that stuff- language, monarchy, regionalism, is given much importance in Canada. By most people, anyway. There's still French separatists in Quebec and Anglophone monarchists and whatnot but most people just don't care much about any of it. It looks odd to Americans but the two languages don't get in the way and the royal family is just a human-interest story on the 6 o'clock news.
Hell, Belgium has three official languages and Switzerland has four and those two are pretty darned efficient societies.

Well the u.S> seems to cause all the world's financial issues due to poor regulation which Canada instituted long ago.

It's not "poor regulation" its poor judgment and endless spending.

The problem with out economy and government is that progressives just love throwing money at every problem and then they worry about how they will pay for that later - well later is now. Of course their only solution is to print more money because they're not educated on economics and their basic brains think "we don't have enough money so we can just print more and pay our debt off that way."

Obviously it's a lot more complicated than that but I just want to be brief.

The problem in the US is that we elect the most "likeable" candidate, not the candidate that has actual solutions but the candidate that promises the most "free ****" and that creates massive economic problems.... Any person can make promises and pretend to be likeable - but those traits don't translate into intelligence or skills....

If you want my opinion - most in the US want something for noting and some politicians are more than willing to "buy their votes."

Our present economy in the US is a direct reflection of everything I just posted.

Do you know which party ruled for most of Canada's modern history? The Liberals. Not American liberals either, what you would call socialists.
