The blacks from the North side of Philly would come in his shop and sell the old stain glass windows that had five or more coats of paint over them. Back then many old buildings in the slums still had stained glass windows that were covered in paint. They would remove them and sell them to antique dealers for $10 to $20 per window. Enough to buy some smack.
