Lake Mead is shrinking -- and with it Las Vegas' water supply

It's even worse north of the border. The ocean is a big radioactive oil slick, hordes of beetles have denuded the forests, BC is becoming a dust bowl, millions of people are migrating across the Rockies. I recommend moving to somewhere else...

I hear you, just today I had to give my last slice of bread to a little child, I don't have any grain left to pestle into flour, if we don't get and rain soon on the scorched husks of our once great wheat fields out east we will be on brink of famine....

Keep your eye on that little child- never know how short the grub supply might get.

What are your views on the great western drought ?
You lose with your liberal revisionism. No such word "Bush phone" appeared on any website or newspaper before 2009.

Obama going to need some kind of legacy, why not Obama-phones ?

I've not paid much attention this season.

It's all Obama's fault?

Probably. Unless it was Bush and the Koch Brothers. :) (I still remember that some folks on these message boards actually believed that George Bush or Dick Cheney personally placed explosive charges and blew up the levees so that New Orleans would flood during Katrina. :))

Of course the AGW proponents are promoting the drought as a result of global warming. Just as they promote too much rain or snow or too hot or too cold or too windy or too calm on as a result of global warming. Whoops correction: global warming is now out of favor and the code word is climate change even though the concern is that the climate is warming.

But the fact is that the climate does change. It always has. New Mexico's current drought is an exceptional drought because conditions are more dry that can be previously identified in the historical record. But the chances are that it has been as dry sometime in the past just as we know it was once covered by shallow seas and rain forests. Nothing stays exactly the same on Planet Earth.

California's current drought is not unprecedented either.

California's current drought is being billed as the driest period in the state's recorded rainfall history. But scientists who study the West's long-term climate patterns say the state has been parched for much longer stretches before that 163-year historical period began.

And they worry that the "megadroughts" typical of California's earlier history could come again.

Through studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers have documented multiple droughts in California that lasted 10 or 20 years in a row during the past 1,000 years -- compared to the mere three-year duration of the current dry spell. The two most severe megadroughts make the Dust Bowl of the 1930s look tame: a 240-year-long drought that started in 850 and, 50 years after the conclusion of that one, another that stretched at least 180 years. . . .
California drought: Past dry periods have lasted more than 200 years, scientists say - San Jose Mercury News

During the early 70's we use to go up in the mountains and party big time on the Kern River.

The Kern use to be the only river in SoCal where you could go wild river rafting.

The Kern is considered one of the most dangerous rivers in California.

The photo was actually taken in 2008. This drought has been going on ever since Obama started campaigning for the Democrat nomination for President. Don't #### with Mother Nature.

LOL. Even the drought is Obama's fault. It's the Obamadrought.

What are your views on the great western drought ?

Lack of sun activity.

Liberals blame man for everything. Intelligent people who deal with facts and reality know it's the sun.

Agriculture consumes 80% of California's water. The Salinas Valley is known as the "Salad Bowl" of America. Being a real man, I'm not into rabbit food. But I'm very concerned about the cattle industry in California with the affects the drought is having on the ranchers.

Right now because the lack of water the ranchers in California are selling off their cattle. You will see a small drop on the price of beef in the West in the stores then it will sky rocket. In fact I have noticed a $1. per pound drop at the stores last week.

We have had "liberal nanny state" water police in many municipalities in Southern California for well over a decade now. Get caught washing your car, watering your lawn on the wrong day or the wrong time of day, your issued a ticket. Gay bath houses are exempt from water conservation regulations for some strange reason.

If Governor Moonbeam goes as far as signing into law mandatory water consumption reduction is when I will start taking hour long showers and washing all of my vehicles every day. There are to many damn people living in California today and the Democrats ion Sacramento still have the welcome matt set out at the California-Mexico border.

I remember when the population of California was 12 million, it's more than tripled in my life time. A couple of weeks ago the libs in Sacramento were having orgasms because California's population will soon be 50 million and that's why California needs high speed rail service from no where to no where they claimed.

The progressives many decades ago conducted the most scientific study ever conducted on population. They looked at every thing from crime, education, culture, standards of living and natural resources in America from soil, minerals, water, weather patterns, timber, crops production, etc. The findings were that America can be a prosperous country if the population was capped at 150 million. It's called the "Dillingham Commission Report to Congress."

I remember when America hit that 150 million number during the 1950's. I also remember when the government use to run commercials on television telling Americans to stop having so many babies during the early 1960's. But in 1965 the Democrat Party noticed when the middle class grew, wages increased and people paid more taxes, they seem to vote the Republican ticket. The Democrat Party can't survive without misery and poverty. The solution was open our borders and bring in unskilled, uneducated immigrants who are extremely likely to become dependent on government for free stuff. The Democrats ignored the progressives "Dillingham Commission Report" that there was only enough natural resources including water to support a population of 150 million. In less than my life time America's population has more than doubled.

Once again, my sig line is proving correct. Even the weather brings about a discussion liberals and politics. Sure, all the liberals are blaming the drought on human activities. Here's an example:

Is It Judgment? Midwest Drought Turning America’s Breadbasket Into Wastebasket

Dang liberals, blaming everything on gay marriage and the like.

People who deliberately waste water during a drought must be liberals too.

LOL. Even the drought is Obama's fault. It's the Obamadrought.

Pretending I'm a liberal, it's Bush's fault. The drought started during the Bush administration.

That was fun.

The left believes that government can control the weather. I don't concur. Government can regulate how water is used. They can regulate how the underground water tables are replenished. They can control our rivers. (The Constitution gave that responsibility to the U.S. Army, Army Corps of Engineers.)

I remember over on the old Politico Forum there were a number of Europeans who brought up how government made it illegal to capture rain run off from one's roof, that the rain water had to be allowed to replenish the water table underground or runoff into streams and rivers.

The fundementalists were right, god is punishing us for gay marriage, by making californians move out......

he could've just droughted Washington the day we passed it, but that would be too easy, instead we die a slow death of valley girls and techies moving in and taking over our neighborhoods....

Oh, by all means, let's continue to argue over whether the drought is Bush's fault or Obama's. Since "the left" believes that the government can control the weather (??!!), then "the left" must think it's Bush's fault.. oh, right, Bush was a leftie, too. Let's see, just who might this "left" who thinks the government controls the weather blame the drought on? Let's see... can't be anyone in government, as it's made up mostly of liberals... must be the Libertarians. Yeah, that's it, the "left" thinks the libertarians caused the drought.

I'll tell you what these southern states really need to do, and that's instead of wasting billions in dollars on stupid liberal pet projects they should be spending it on finding an efficient way of turning salt water into fresh water.

Tim-
They already have those ways. All you have to do is visit the ME...

Maybe you didn't comprehend what I said. It's the SUN. The unexplained lack of activity on the sun. The polar field of the sun was suppose to flip like it does every 14 years or so and it didn't happen. The lack of sun spots.

Greenland use to be green at one time when the Vikings first discovered Greenland. It will become green again and it's not because of man but the sun.

There's climate change in the world and there always have been and it's not because of man as the left wants us to believe. It's because of the sun.

The Earth's polar fields will flip eventually, it's happened before. What will happen, will electric motors start running backwards ?

Yes, you said it was the sun.
wheter you're right or not, I don't know, and neither does anyone else.
You also said:

The left believes that government can control the weather.

which made me wonder just who this "left" was that thought the government could control the weather.

You speak of "climate change", but there has been no discussion of the drought being caused by climate change. We've had droughts before, after all. Do you believe the current one is a result of climate change? Why do you think so?

Greetings, APACHERAT. :2wave:

Our town encourages catching rainwater from the roof, and occasionally offer rain barrels at a huge discount. This eliminates the need for people to use "city" water for watering their gardens and lawn, and washing vehicles. I assume this water eventually makes its way down to the water table, too. This was always a no-brainer for me, since city water contains who-knows-how-many chemicals which are added to make that water safe to drink, which is why I have an additional water purification system in my kitchen for drinking and cooking water. I suppose I could purify rain water for drinking, but so far I haven't needed to.

Rain water, on the other hand is "pure," being free of those chemicals, which the plants seem to appreciate. However, this past Summer, in the period May 1 through July 17, NE Ohio only had three days when it didn't rain, so there was flooding, because the storm drains couldn't handle the water volume, while other areas such as Houston, Texas were begging for rain. I know, because I was there at that time, due to a broken leg. Mother Nature sure seems to be capricious!

It may not be "printed knowledge" but the LGBT community wants more than the whole nine yards.

What is printed knowledge, the liberal "Nanny State" has gone into our bathrooms and have told us what kind of crappers we can crap in. Mandatory low flush toilets. You know the kind, take a good dump and you have to flush it three times.

The biggest advocates for PC crappers has been San Fransisco. As usual with liberals/progressives they never think of the consequences of their continuous agenda of change will have. Just recently San Fransisco started to stink. They couldn't figure out why San Fransisco was becoming to smell like New Jersey.

Guess what was causing the big stink ? :doh PC toilets, aka low flush toilets. Not enough water when you flush to move the liberals crap through the sewers. The crap was stagnate sitting in the sewers not going any where and stinking up the entire city.

I'm trying to imagine the plug that might occur should we try to flush the left vs. right nonsense you're spouting now. It would be better to just pile it up and then plow it into the orchards to make the fruit grow better.

You did not answer the question just how did you find out about the gay bath houses?

I would think it would take some digging about gay bath houses to find that information generally

Since they no longer teach history in our schools except revisionist history most Americans are unaware that the western half of America is nothing but a desert. Back during the 1800's the great plains east of the Rockies were called the Great American Desert. West of the Rockies it was mostly nothing but a desert.

Los Angeles is nothing but a desert, It has to import most of it's water or it couldn't support more than a few hundred thousand people.

During the 1800's there use to be range wars between the ranchers over water. It's going to get nasty in Northern California.

When there was water in California you had the federal government cutting off the water to the farmers because the eviormentalist said a little fish smaller than a small sardine was more important than people being able to eat veggies or take a shower.

Polgaria, been in contact with your sister in No-Cal recently and her perspective on the drought ? Have they dug a well yet ?

It would be better if a gay spoke for the gays.

Maybe the DP's official gay spoke hole will come along and answer all of your questions for you.

There has been a 14 year drought in this part of the US and if it goes on much longer Las Vegas will be a ghost town. If you own real estate there you should get while the gettin is good. Vegas may be the next Salton Sea resort area.

LAKE MEAD, Nev.
- When you head out on Nevada's Lake Mead, the first thing you notice is a white line. That's where the water used to be.
What did this look like a decade ago?
"This was all underwater," said Pat Mulroy, the general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority. "I mean boats were everywhere. There was a whole marina here."
Mulroy said that the drought began 14 years ago. Satellite photos show the Colorado River, which feeds Lake Mead, is drying up -- so the lake is rapidly shrinking. Islands are growing, and boats are floating far from where they once were.

Lake Mead is shrinking -- and with it Las Vegas' water supply - CBS News

If Las Vegas is in a draught, it isn’t because of lack of rain.
Year…………yrs below 2” between 2-4 over 4 inches
1997-2012………..3…………………6…………………….6
1982-1996………..1…………………9…………………….5
1967-1982…………1………………..7…………………….7
1952-1966…………4………………..5…………………….6
1937-1951…………1………………..6…………………….8
Average……………..2.0…………….5.6………………….5.4
Although Las Vegas had 1 more year below 2 inches than the average since 1937 for a 15 year period, Las Vegas was slightly over in rain fall of between 2-4 inches and over 4 inches, 5.6 to 6 years and 5.4 years to 6 years. I would say rain fall on Las Vegas has been pretty close to average for any 15 year cycle or period.
