Lake Mead is shrinking -- and with it Las Vegas' water supply

With the aquifers being depleted, the mighty San Joaquin's ag future is starting to look pretty dismal.

It's starting to look that way. California's second biggest river is dry, and has been for some 60 years now.

I'm not sure just where you got those figures, but let's assume for now they're correct.
Flows of the Colorado river are in the order of 2,000 to 20,000 cubic feet per second. Let's take an average of 10,000 cfs to make the math simple. The next question is, just how much is a cubic foot?

Turns out to be 7.48 gallons.

So, 10,000 x 7.48 = 74,800 gallons per second on average.

60 x 60 x 24 x 74,800 = 6,462,720,000.

If your billion gallons a day figure is accurate, then, a little less than 1/6 of the water is being used for golf courses. That is assuming, of course, that those golf courses aren't using recycled water.

So, yes, given those conditions, the proportion of the water used for that purpose is significant.
Thanks for completing the math Dittohead not!images (33).jpg
Here is some more compelling statistics about water usage per golfer:
Fact: A single, 18-hole round of golf at a typical Las Vegas golf course requires 2,507 gallons of water.

That's not "virtual water," it's the actual amount of water that has to be sprinklered onto the golf course to get it ready, each night, for each golfer.

What that means is that, every time a golfer steps to a tee in Las Vegas, that one hole required 139 gallons of water to prepare, just for that one golfer that day.

That means that a foursome in Las Vegas, playing 18 holes, will use as much water as typical family in the U.S. uses in a month. Pause and consider what the driest city in America, Las Vegas, has to tell us about golf and water, sustainability and the reality of changing water habits
The Big Thirst: Nothing
When push comes to shove and the water really starts to run out in the southwest common people will not be allowed to water their lawns, wash their cars or flush number one ... But somehow, I'm sure, golf courses will still be allowed to turn barren desert into the lush rolling verdant hills of Scotland at everyone else's expense.
All for a "game".

I blame air conditioning.
I wouldn't camp overnight where there wasn't fresh water but since air conditioning was perfected hundreds of thousands of Americans have settled in the 'sun belt', largely affluent types who are used to the government providing them with the means to maintain their lifestyle- golf courses, swimming pools, manicured lawns, cheap Mexican servants, etc.
Cut them off, I say. Too late to save the Colorado river but let them all go find their own water.
It's not just the air conditioning that consumes vast amounts of electricity... In many dry arid dessert areas where people settle, one form of habitat cooling that is quite common is the evaporative or "swamp" cooler ... that cools the air by evaporating, guess what? WATER.

They can be seen on the rooftops of homes, shops and business' all over the southwest.

What good did that Obama phone do you ?
Don't you mean "Bushphone"?:lamo
Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.
The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.
The Truth About The Obama Phone | ThinkProgress
As it happens the "Obama phone" actually was signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2008. The program is called "SafeLink Wireless." An article from August 2008 confirms this.

Nope, I said Obama phone.

Blaming everything on Bush has gotten old.
Echoing stupid lies from Drudge has gotten old too.
I'm not "blaming" anyone here but Bush signed the bill starting the first SafeLink Wireless." cell phone give away for SS and Welfare recipients..
They are more correctly called Bush phones.
But OOPS... there's those pesky little things called facts that always seem to get in the way of your sophomoric partisan hackery.:lamo

A crazy aspect of that is that only 3% of the food grown in the USA is fruit or vegetables. A lot of that in CA. Farmers are paid and subsidised to grow the stuff that makes you fat and sick.

The white line is where the level was 14 years ago.

Las Vegas reuses 93% of water and is cutting water use even as population grows. The problem is the Colorado river is drying up.

"Without Lake Mead there will be no Las Vegas."

Relating the size of the cars on the highway, it would appear that the low level stripe of land is a hundred feet or more. Is that correct?

LOL. Actually they didn't so far as we know. But they did get along with the Pueblo people who it is presumed assimilated them.

I recently watched a documentary that showed signs of warfare and even cannibalism towards the end of their culture. I have visited many ruins and find it all very fascinating.

COME ON, PARTISAN HACKERY ON A POLITICAL WEBSITE !!!
Sophomoric partisan hackery.
The term "Obama phones" is a childish lie... and you know it....
Whereas the term Bush phones is more historically accurate

Not only that, but when everything finally dries out all these Californians are going to head north and start the second wave of californicating Oregon and Washington.

Hey if you live in Los Angeles or San Francisco, I just want you to know, those stories about record snowpacks in the cascades and columbia river running high, all lies, republican lies, it sucks up here, we suffer extreme dehydration in the seattle area, puget sound is drying up, there is no water to be had up here, no skiing, no snow, no water. the Koch brothers stole it all, I recommend moving to somewhere else..... :(

WOW! That is a scary pic. I used to go there when I was a teen. It was a great party spot.

During the early 70's we use to go up in the mountains and party big time on the Kern River.

The Kern use to be the only river in SoCal where you could go wild river rafting.

The Kern is considered one of the most dangerous rivers in California.

The photo was actually taken in 2008. This drought has been going on ever since Obama started campaigning for the Democrat nomination for President. Don't #### with Mother Nature.

It's even worse north of the border. The ocean is a big radioactive oil slick, hordes of beetles have denuded the forests, BC is becoming a dust bowl, millions of people are migrating across the Rockies. I recommend moving to somewhere else...

You lose with your liberal revisionism. No such word "Bush phone" appeared on any website or newspaper before 2009.

Obama is going to need some kind of legacy, why not Obama-phones ?
