Man dies after firefighters won't cross street to help, daughter says

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out there's a protocol to be followed, although so far it looks like it would have been fine to run out and help.

There are some really silly guidelines and rules out there.

Well, the only thing I can think of is that if they go off on an undispatched call, they could end up having dispatch call while they are there. That should be easily fixed though with a simple radio in to dispatch, so....

I guess the 'smartest person on the planet' can't read too well. :doh

So you are whining about me going off topic and yet here you go keeping it off topic- try some noise and light discipline like they should have taught you in the army...

Never said i was THE smartest, but apparently smarter than a few in this thread.... :lamo

Oh, so now you're telling me that I can't post as well? Funny how I still don't see one post from you on the topic of the thread....So, I'm done with you professor....*shakes head*

True....All they have to do is radio to dispatch that they are responding to a situation....

Hogwash. More than once I picked a radio up to let dispatch know that we were responding to where we were for what we were doing. Judgement like that demands a desk job, not one where the public is at risk.

Judgement like that demands you get fired, not that you get promoted.

I'm not justifying anybody's bad behavior, just saying that's what the markers are there for. If you can say "I'm on Interstate 70 going east around mile 220," that narrows it down quite a bit.

I agree but if you like most people were not paying attention to the mile markers you just have to give something else. Point is if you do not know the address or mile marker you should be able to explain where you are and that should be enough (assuming you gave a half decent description)

If the facts confirm the allegations following the investigation, I believe the firefighters responsible should be fired and barred for life from working for the District of Columbia. There is no reasonable basis for their failure to respond to a life-and-death situation. Moreover, municipalities do not prohibit staff from responding immediately to emergencies such as the one in question.

I fully agree with The Washington Post's op-ed: D.C. firefighters showed callous disregard for a man’s life - The Washington Post

Why just D.C.? Bar them from the profession for life!

Well, from the article the guy just standing there was a new probie who didn't know yet what to do, so he did ask the senior person. And let's remind that not every firefighter is an EMT, it's not the same job. The senior people, with the training, should have dispatched themselves.

Reading the article is a good way to not say stupid **** and look silly.

This story is one of those that screams that there is more to the story. Something isn't right. When something sounds too ridiculous to be true, there usually is more to the story.

That's what I thought. That's why I immediately read the story... and it happened, just the way the woman and witnesses said it happened. The firefighters refused to cross the street without an official dispatch, and one of the firefighters actually stood in the doorway and watched. Unbelievable. :(

Hard to get your head around that.

Reminds me of the story i saw here a couple of years ago where firefighters made the effort to attend the burning home of someone who hadn't paid their $80 taxes - or some ridiculously low amount. They stood there and watched his house burn to the ground. Yeah i know, the homeowner messed up, he didn't pay that $80 bucks. Still the firefighters took the time to go there and stood and watched it burn. How about put out the fire and get the $80 later. Common sense prevails. How any firefighter or someone trained in life saving techniques can just stand there and do nothing is beyond me.

Firefighters put out fires and administer life saving techniques to those that require them. At least that's what they're trained to do until idiotic rules come into play.
I remember that story. IIRC there's a long back-story to that where the homeowner spent years making trouble for the city, and the firefighters final had enough of his bull****. It wasn't just $80, he had all kinds of unpaid local taxes, fines for trash on his property, home was about to foreclose...the $80 was just one of many things he didn't pay. That guy was an asshole.

Isn't it interesting that none of that info made the article? ;)

It should hold the same weight as a Doctor or lawyer getting their license revoked.

No. Not even close to the same training time or education required. And to remind again - not all firefighters are EMTs, some just, you know, fight fires.

Still not an excuse when your job is to be a life saving professional first responder, even if you do not like or want to be around the citizen in need.

Most firefighters are paramedics or EMT's unless they are a volunteer department, which this department was not.
