Transcript: Obama's State Of The Union Address As Prepared For Delivery : It's All Politics : NPR
Today in America, a teacher spent extra time with a student who needed it, and did her part to lift America's graduation rate to its highest level in more than three decades.

An entrepreneur flipped on the lights in her tech startup, and did her part to add to the more than eight million new jobs our businesses have created over the past four years.

An autoworker fine-tuned some of the best, most fuel-efficient cars in the world, and did his part to help America wean itself off foreign oil.

[and so on...]

Didnt see a obvious thread for this, so here ya go. No spin. Read the trancript, flame away. Personally the one clip saw where he basically said "if congress wont do what i want, Ill do it myself" seemed pretty tyranical. This govt was designed for congress to set policy, and the President to implement policy. And its a bit shocking to see some people in congress stand up and cheer when the President says such a thing. Reminds me of Ceaser right before he disbanded the Roman Senate.

Now for a word cloud:

Other than the EO talk, I didn't find too much in that speech that was over the top....Typical lame duck speech.

Next we will see clips of a bored Obama riding a bike in the halls of the West Wing.

the XO remark was a line in the sand for congress
work with me, or to the extent i am legally able, i will move things forward myself
seems transparent to me

felt sorry for the pizza dough kid who had to stand up beside his boss in front of all of America and look 'proud' that Obama had arranged for him to have a job that pays a whopping $20,000 per year

Yeah, does that sound like a constitutional, American thing to you? Threatening, "do it my way, or I'll do it without you"? I keep searching, and for the life of me I can't find the clause that says 'If congress won't do what the President wants to do, then he can act by himself.'....

That is what we are told is the new norm.....No longer should we have this inequality right? Just bring everyone down to that level and we won't.

Executive orders exist. Sorry if this is news to you.

The incredible shrinking man.

A hike in the minimum wage? Really? All the problems in this economy and he even has to spend 3 milliseconds on this non-issue?
Well we all know why that is- it polls well.
I just would expect the Presisent of th eUA to rise above this petty nonsense.

Oh and this howler.
You know, today, women make up about half our workforce, but they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. That is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment.

Women deserve equal pay for equal work.

This is why Obama sickens me. This stat is COMPLETe BS and worse, he knows it. Yet he still dishes it out.

Hey, you know-gotta stop that 'war om women' (gag)

the power of the Executive office. the third branch of government
another branch, the judiciary, will not allow him to exceed the scope of the authority of the Executive
the third branch, congress, will see to that

Obama put congress on notice that he was no longer waiting on it to work with him on those things he could do alone, via the legal authority of his Executive office
he waited five years too long, but it's a start

A kid starting at $20K/year is not bad, by any means - some years I don't make that much. ;)

We're talking more about the ideology. The purpose of the Presidency is to execute the laws that congress makes and represent the country in foreign affairs. Not to make policy. Hes redefining the balance of power.

The real sleeper was the Republican response where their token woman advised us that they have no plans for governance. It's too hard. They do however wish the country well. In the meantime they'll be busy preventing progress in any and all things.

Perhaps the GOP needs to rethink their strategy of shutting down government.

That aquward moment when everyone can clearly see that John Boehner is more black than Obama.

Not sure what that has to do with anything. Congress controls spending. "shutting down govt", also known as not authorizing spending, is well within their power and purpose.

The only thing that it's contrary to is our democracy. Republicans seem unaware of that, which is, I would guess, a fatal flaw.

Government of, by, for the people governed.

wrong
the Executive has the power to lead the country ... should (s)he so choose to exercise it
and after five years, Obama has finally decided to claim the authority vested in his elected position

yes, it does have the power of the purse
but is shutting down government the best way in which to wield that power

How so? People voted them into office. They decide whether to approve legislation by vote. Thats democracy.

Perhaps you could show me where it says that in the constitution.

Thats not the constitution. But ill play along. Assuming we accept that a modern web dictionary definition of 'executive' somehow defines the power the POTUS has, 'power to lead' is still not in your dictionary.

a person or group of persons having administrative or supervisory authority in an organization.

Thus the power to execute, not to lead. So, try again. You seem to be very confident of your interpretation of the powers of the President, specifically this 'power to lead'. It should be pretty easy for you explain the logic upon which this is based.

everyone here who believes that an executive is a follower instead of the leader, please raise your hands (or post it where johnny5 can see)
