and yet another politician shows us how money buys 'stuff', like government contracts

Former Va. Gov. McDonnell, wife indicted on federal corruption charges

Former Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell and wife Maureen were indicted Tuesday on federal corruption charges for allegedly accepting gifts, vacations and loans from a businessman seeking special treatment from the state for his fledgling business.

The 14-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and false statements in connection with the McDonnells’ relationship to Jonnie R. Williams Sr., chief executive of nutritional supplements maker Star Scientific Inc.
It seems the former first lady of Virginia is at the root of the McDonnell's problems
In 2009, just before the governor's inauguration, first lady Maureen McDonnell wrote to a senior staffer for her husband: "I need answers and Bob is screaming about the thousands I'm charging up in credit card debt. We are broke, have an unconscionable amount in credit card debt already, and this inaugural is killing us!"

Even before they took up residence in the governor's mansion, Williams was offering the family money. He was known as a donor who allowed the McDonnells use of his private jet on the campaign trail. In December, he was willing to pay for an Oscar de la Renta dress that the cash-strapped first lady could wear to the inauguration.
“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”
~ James Madison, letter to Edward Livingston, July 10, 1822

Disappointing as hell. He needs to be prosecuted.

Ooof. Why is it that those who scream the loudest about morality and whatnot end up like this?

He was once a rising star in the Republican party. What a shame.

I guess if you don't have any standards, you're never guilty of wrongdoing, right?

Who said that? A lot of people from high places fall. But the morality preachers seem to do so in a rather large percentage.

Besides, not putting on a front of fake morality doesn't mean you have no standards... it more likely means your standards are actually real.

In all fairness I have not heard the Repubs refer to themselves as the party of morals and ethics for many, many years. I guess it even became too embarrassing for even them to say.

Would you have felt that way if he was starting a 2nd term, as with Christie?

Interesting that VA and NJ have their gubernatorial elections on the same odd year after the POTUS election .

He was a morality pulpit pounder politician like the days of old. Of course it was him being all hung up about sex. Even though his Lt. Guvner was far worse. Thank God he lost his gov. bid. Unfortunately he lost it to a schmuck in Terry McCauliffe.
