Russian police kill Islamist militant leader before Olympics.....

Police have killed a senior Islamist militant in Russia's North Caucasus ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, where security forces searched on Tuesday for a woman they fear is planning an attack during the games.

Putin had a phone call on Tuesday with U.S. President Barack Obama in which they discussed how best to have a "safe and secure" Winter Olympics, the White House said.

"(She) may be used as a terrorist-suicide bomber by (insurgency) leaders to organize terrorist acts during preparations for and during the 2014 Winter Olympics," read the letter, asking police to look immediately into the matter.

Photographs of Ibragimovaya show a woman in a hijab, wearing a long dress.

A White House statement about the Putin-Obama call said the two leaders talked about how best to advance shared U.S.-Russian interests, "including a safe and secure Sochi Olympics, for which the United States has offered its full assistance.

The U.S. military is making two ships in the Black Sea available should American support be required during the Olympics. Washington is also offering American technology used to thwart roadside bombs in places like Afghanistan to boost security during the Olympics, a spokesman for U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey said.....snip~

This was after Rogers and a couple of others came out stating that the Russians weren't sharing information with us. Like they use to. So now either way we will have 2 ships in the area in case needed.

While the Obama claim was unwarranted, this is equally misguided. I would guess that the US delegation would be a prime target for any attack.

Ah...this is a good point. I hadnt thought of that really....but mostly had been thinking that all athletes and spectators would be targets.

To be honest, I dont think they would because there are so many much much easier targets...randomly everywhere. THe risk would be higher....would their piot be worth it? The current attacks have been associated with the Chechen conflict.

Well sure, but hitting the American delegation would certainly strain relations between Russia and the US and get far more attention worldwide, which is the ultimate goal.

The United States is offering American technology used to thwart roadside bombs in places like Afghanistan to bolster Russia's security during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, as Moscow faces militant threats to disrupt the Games.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, discussed the possibility with his Russian counterpart during broader talks between the two military chiefs in Brussels on Tuesday, Dempsey's spokesman said. No decisions were reached.
