Surgeon General adds to List of Smoking's Harms.....

It's no secret that smoking causes lung cancer. But what about diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction? Fifty years into the war on smoking, scientists still are adding diseases to the long list of cigarettes' harms — even as the government struggles to get more people to kick the habit.

Nearly half a million people will die from smoking-related diseases this year. Each day, more than 3,200 youths smoke their first cigarette. New products such as e-cigarettes, with effects that aren't yet understood, complicate public health messages. And if current trends continue unabated, 5.6 million of today's children and teens will go on to die prematurely during adulthood because of smoking, the report found.

Remarkably, the report adds more entries to the official list of smoking-caused diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction, the macular degeneration that can blind older adults, two additional cancers — liver and colorectal — and cleft palate birth defects.

1964: That first report called for "remedial actions" to reduce smoking. Warning labels on cigarette packaging started appearing a year later.

2014: With warnings now everywhere, Friday's report says, "We know that increasing the cost of cigarettes is one of the most powerful interventions we can make." In 2012, the average price of a pack of cigarettes was $6, largely reflecting an increase in state and federal taxes. For every 10 percent increase in the price, there's a 4 percent drop in smoking.....snip~

It thins your blood. You can't have plastic surgery if you smoke. So, yeah, it does soften up Mr. Happy.

We smoke because we foolishly tried it and became addicted not just to nicotine but hundreds of other chemicals they added to increase the physical addiction.

They better not mess with my E-cigs. That is just cruelty for the sheer joy of being dicks.

I was, once again, trying to be funny. It wsa suppose to be funny with all the truly horrible diseases I woudl be shocked by ED. I quit 20 years ago before they came out with patchs. I still dream about smoking. I have wondered about why ecigs seem to get the same hate as regular smokes. I thought it was just a lack of studies but I dunno.

Because we were idiots when we were younger. You simply cannot overstate just how ****ing addictive nicotine is. I gave up drugs, I gave up drinking, I have failed miserably at giving up smoking. When I was a month in the hospital in 2012 I thought the time had finally come...until I smelled the first cigarette smoke after I got out and had to rush over and bumm one.

I am just now getting over a very nasty case of bronchitis made all the worse for being a smoker for over 30 years. I would be out of breath(still am some) just walking across the room. And yet every hour or so I had to step out and have a smoke, coughing terribly every time I inhaled. While increased costs and programs help people to quit, the big thing is to do everything in our power to keep people from starting. It is ever so much easier that way.

Well, you already seen the way Chicago NY and L.A. are going with banning the E-Cigs just like the real ones.

1964: Cigarettes were the major concern. "The habitual use of tobacco is related primarily to psychological and social drives, reinforced and perpetuated by pharmacological (drug) actions of nicotine."

2014: "The tobacco industry continues to introduce and market new products that establish and maintain nicotine addiction," Friday's report says. The percentage of middle and high school students who use electronic or e-cigarettes more than doubled between 2011 and 2012.....snip~

When I started smoking cigarettes were .50 cents a pack. Today they are close to $4.00. My goodness. I hate to even think about it.

Smoking doesn't "cause cancer" people are either predisposed to cancer of the lungs, throat, mouth etc or they're not - smoking may exceed the inevitable...

We all die of cancer - when we die of old age we die of cancer.

Cancer is genetics...... There is no cause for cancer...

That's why 2-year-olds are born with cancer -- it's not a ****ing disease it's an illness.
