Senate report: Benghazi attack was preventable

Adam Goldman and Anne Gearan
The report notes that 15 people “supporting the investigation or otherwise helpful” to the U.S. have since been killed.

A long-delayed Senate Intelligence Committee report released Wednesday faulted both the State Department and the intelligence community for not preventing attacks on two outposts in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including a U.S. ambassador, about 16 months ago. The bipartisan report laid out more than a dozen findings regarding the assaults on a diplomatic compound and a CIA annex in the city. It said the State Department failed to increase security at its mission despite warnings, and blamed intelligence agencies for not sharing information about the existence of the CIA outpost with the U.S. military.:peace

Fox News national security analyst KT McFarland ignored key findings in a new bipartisan Senate report on the attacks in Benghazi to revive calls for a special prosecutor or select congressional committee to further investigate the attacks, despite the fact that the new exhaustive report is largely in line with previous investigations.

On the January 15 edition of Happening Now,McFarland discussed the newly released Senate Select Intelligence Committee report, declaring it a "bombshell." She went on to conclude that the report proved Benghazi is "not a phony scandal" and that it showed the need for a special prosecutor or special select committee to investigate "more unanswered questions."

Newsflash: A liberal begs to defend the hildabeast and obummer from any wrong. "What does it matter" right? People are dead not going to bring them back so why do we care as long as we got obummer and the hildabeast.

There is a link to the Senate Intelligence Report in the OP story.

Thank you for that Pete.

I didn't know that Fox News had any prosecutorial powers. Thanks for letting me know...

Also, I'm glad to know, at least in your opinion, that what Fox News says is just as important as what the US Senate says.

However, in my opinion, neither Fox nor MSNBC have any importance in these legal matters especially when compared to the US Senate or the US House of Representatives.

I know you're fascinated by Fox, but I have to file this under "Who cares?" The Senate report is damning enough for any Hillary hater.:peace

my question is what is so groundbreaking about this report?

here is one key passage from the senate report

The Majority believes that the terrorist attacks against U.S. personnel at the Temporary Mission Facility and the Annex in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 and 12, 2012, were likely preventable based on the known security shortfalls at the U.S. Mission and the significant strategic (although not tactical) warnings from the Intelligence Community (IC) about the deteriorating security situation in Libya.

http://www.intelligence.senate.gov/benghazi2014/benghazi.pdf

and for comparison here is a passage from the state departments own internal report from 2012:

Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department (the “Department”) resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.

don't these passages sound similar?

that is just my opinion.

Do tell what was damning in the report, Jack?:peace

State was warned of the threat and was asked for additional security, ignored the former and turned down the latter. Hillary was SecState.

so? that was the same thing the state deparments internal investigation came up with when they issued their report.

So what is new in this senate report.

You answered your own question. And I agree to a point.

What this report allows by it's conclusions, is justification for an independent prosecutor to investigate if crimes were committed either inadvertently or intentionally. The fact that deaths resulted may rise to the level of criminal prosecution (criminal negligence for instance). At the very least, a court could determine what processes and procedures lead to the deaths and give a legal basis for the Congress to act to correct the problems without political push-back from either side. Then, maybe we can prevent similar deaths in future.

I don't believe State's internal report was quite so categorical, and in any case a bipartisan Senate report packs quite a bit more political punch than an internal State Dept. report.:peace

i am not denying that, but i am trying to understand how this report would cause anything new to happen if the previous report said the same thing?

They aren't exactly the same. Similar, but not the same.

Primarily, the difference here is that this report is a bi-partisan report that comes from the Congress which has the Constitutional power of oversight, and can appoint an independent prosecutor if the Justice Department doesn't.

This gives both parties political cover to move forward with a criminal investigation, should they decide to do so.

I'm not sure if it's needed though. What IS needed is reform in the communications pipeline between CIA, DOD and State, as well as a revamping of powers and responsibilities of State's decision makers as to what constitutes a "crisis" requiring additional help from DOD or evacuation of State's personnel.

Of course, there's still the a lot of questions remaining such why we were there in Banghazi in the first place given the threats that existed? Was it another Iran-Contra type scheme? Who knows? I doubt it, but I don't know, and only an independent prosecutor could get to the bottom of it, like was done with Iran-Contra, in addition to Congressional hearings.

Hillary should be the First Woman to be imprisoned at Guantanamo. Along with Obama of course.

The report is damning for Hillary Clinton, Panetta, Obama, Biden and their White House aides.

The evidence proves the State Department was responsible for the deaths of Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans.

The State Dept was well aware of the threats in the region. June 12, 2012 the DIA produced a report titled "Libya: Terrorists Now Targeting U.S. and Western Interests" which said in part "We expect more anti-U.S. terrorist attacks in eastern Libya."

The evidence of Steven's request by email for more security in July 2012 and again in August 2012 where he sent a full report of the degrading conditions and the knowledge of 10 al-Qaida training camps that had been established in the area. The State Department did not respond to his request. Less than a month later he was killed.

The report tells at the same time that Stevens was asking for more security, the decision by other countries to abandon Benghazi because of increased militant activity meant that "tripwires" had been crossed and should have been a sign at that time for the U.S. to abandon as well but they did not. Meanwhile, the report notes that the CIA Annex one mile away "consistently upgraded its security posture over the same time period". But what the State Department did send Stevens in his pleas for more security was a surveillance camera system sent to the compound that was never installed because the State Dept. did not send a technical team to do the work.

The report along with the testimony given at hearings proves there was no riot over some YouTube video that caused the attack but 15 minutes after the attack Panetta was alerted and a big pow wow occurred at the White House and every damn one of them knew it was al-Qaida yet they concocted a story to lie to the American people this was all about a YouTube video. Why? because it showed incompetence within the State Department and 2. it was an election year where the President was campaigning on how we had al-Qaida on the run.
