N.S.A. Devises Radio Pathway Into Computers

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/15/us...t.html?hp&_r=0

WASHINGTON — The National Security Agency has implanted software in nearly 100,000 computers around the world that allows the United States to conduct surveillance on those machines and can also create a digital highway for launching cyberattacks.

While most of the software is inserted by gaining access to computer networks, the N.S.A. has increasingly made use of a secret technology that enables it to enter and alter data in computers even if they are not connected to the Internet, according to N.S.A. documents, computer experts and American officials.

The technology, which the agency has used since at least 2008, relies on a covert channel of radio waves that can be transmitted from tiny circuit boards and USB cards inserted surreptitiously into the computers. In some cases, they are sent to a briefcase-size relay station that intelligence agencies can set up miles away from the target.

The radio frequency technology has helped solve one of the biggest problems facing American intelligence agencies for years: getting into computers that adversaries, and some American partners, have tried to make impervious to spying or cyberattack. In most cases, the radio frequency hardware must be physically inserted by a spy, a manufacturer or an unwitting user.
You think they are spying on Americans with this? Not sure I can believe what they're saying.

The NSA has many thousands of people working overtime, 24/7 to make sure that the USA knows what everyone on this planet is saying via any means of communication.

Nothing surprises me anymore about the NSA. The people who pass this off as not possible or say its not a big deal are the people that are depriving others of their rights.

Mornin ICF. Do you think the NSA should have limitations in protecting the Physical Security of the US?

I'm not sure if I understand your question. I don't believe the NSA is effective what so ever in protecting the United States. It was in place prior to 9/11 and performing essentially the same duties and we still obviously suffered greatly that day. I believe it is a smokescreen to invade the personal lives of millions of Americans.

As worried as I am I'm also astonished at the level of competency this required.

Well, yes, if you let a strange USB card sit plugged into your computer, someone might spy on you.

I literally have 500 at my desk right now for a marketing campaign. I wonder if anyone is going to look twice at them when I hand them out.

Well, we know all that competency didn't come with the last 6 years.
