Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Which states? NJ? MD? IL? WI until very recently? (not a complete list)

Otherwise, you probably be very surprised at the number of people that are armed. I mean...how would you know?

Every person I've known that does CC makes it widely known to everyone, on Facebook, in person, at work. That's all people talk about around here is guns so it would be pretty rare for somebody to be packing without making mention of it. Now of course this doesn't cover strangers in public but even among gun fanatics most don't CC that I know of. They keep them in their homes and go hunting, and target shooting, and display them on their porch to every visitor they have over.

LOL Almost no one I know knows or would even dream I carry.

So you are right, it doesnt cover strangers in public and you really have no idea. People do not discuss it for a reason.

According to Utah cc'ers on the gun forums I'm a member of...they are quite common. (It's a popular topic of discussion)

Being in your own home and protecting yourself from an intruder is a pretty clear cut case. There is little question lethal force should be an option for the defender. An armed person in public is a very different situation. Now they are entrusted with the responsibility of when to use lethal force in an environment that rarely requires it. You get idiots like Zimmerman who go looking for trouble then have to kill their way out in fear. You get this guy who apparently snapped and killed someone over texting in a theater... The point I'm trying to make is that CC is not a unipolar positive, there are negatives associated with it as well.

Please compare most of your statements to driving a car. Not only that, the numbers prove that cars are BY FAR much more dangerous. Intent has nothing to do with it, road rage is common but not even the biggest threat...either you are at risk from complete strangers every day or you or not. Then look at numbers and likelihood. It's interesting that NO ONE looks at car drivers with the same trepidation as gun carriers.

Car drivers are indeed looked at with similar trepidation.... Just look at all the laws created around the use of a car. They go MUCH further than owning a gun.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

I take the side of letting this play out in the criminal justice system and I favor the defendant being afforded all constitutional protections unlike those who are ready to string him up right now.

I do too, but then I favored that with Zimmerman also.

Never negative for me in 10 years.

And yet the death and injury rates are horrible. Besides....most of those laws are regarding registration/taxation or traffic or environmental regulation. After initial licensing requirements, and purchase, you are pretty much good to go.

By public perception? No. Verax's post was even evidence of it. Car drivers are not, as a general group, looked at negatively at all.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Car drivers who take their cars into public buildings to kill people are very much seen negatively.
It's all part of the "Me! Me! Me!" generation who presume that their rights trump everyone else's. My car! My gun! My phone! I want them I'll have them where ever I go!
Phones as well as guns have no place in such a venue. Why do you need to check email in an entertainment room? Why is it even turned on? You and the hundreds of others have paid to be there to see the show. All of it. The woman was right to complain and should have called a manager to tase you out of the building until you attained a level of social awareness such that you were tolerable in the company of humans.

And, in that case, the system worked exactly as it's supposed to.

You don't suppose that's because as a society we have and continue to enact laws that protect people and reduce the chances of fatalities and injuries as much as possible?

There are about 255 million cars in the US, many of them carrying more than one person at a time. There aren't 255 million guns. Initial licensing and purchase is only the beginning. Registration, regulation and traffic enforcement are the day to day realities of owning a car. And are put in place to better protect the populous. Ignoring, or setting aside those points, is foolish.

What is relevant is actual risk. And actual risk of death is far far greater in or by a car. That cant be denied yet because of cultural perceptions....we Americans do indeed deny it. Every day. Multiple times.

And there are just as many rules for 'using' a gun safely in public as there are for traffic safety. At least comparable. So attempting to create some distinction here is more foolish, IMO.

All that matters is public safety, right? Isnt that the issue with guns, concealed carry? It's hypocritical in the face of the deaths and injury every single day by vehicle.

Um...I dont see that with regards to cars at all. I mean sure, we are attempting it currently by making new laws to stop texting and cell phone use. Yet the deaths continue to rise BECAUSE of those 2 things, despite laws.

Again...what's your point? I am more in danger EVERY single day from a teen with a cell phone than a person with a gun.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Texting in a theater is annoying.

and the geezer with the gun was just defending himself from said texting, because we all know, those with concealed carry permits are only carrying them for defensive purposes

Lot's of people check their phones or send out texts before a movie starts. Has nothing to do with what you're talking about. Furthermore this ex-cop did talk to management and they probably told him to get lost since the movie hadn't started yet.

About 100k Utah residents do CC out of a population of 2.8 million. At any given time perhaps 25%? of CC'ers are carrying. I really have no idea how to guess how many permit holders carry all the time. At that rate less than 1% of the population is likely to be carrying a firearm which is pretty consistent with my general observations. That is not a lot.

Do you think its unfair to consider cc'ers as sometimes dangerous? And yes I consider every other vehicle on the road with me as a constant threat that is trying to kill me. I spend a lot more time worrying about a vehicle slamming into my daughter's face than a bullet.

Eventually it did, yes.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

There should be a law that protects movie theaters, schools, etc from being sued that have cell phone jammers.

I dunno - considering odds are probably [randomly high-numbered "statistic" pulled out of my ass] high that institutions that have them are using so in violation of federal law.

would such an active device also prevent the calling of first responders?

I was looking at the headlines and reading through a few of the stories.
I will reserve judgment until we have more information.
It is possible that Reeves felt threatened.
We have a legal system, If a grand Jury finds grounds for an indictment.
He can present his side to a jury.

Well at least he did it in Florida...

How do you go from 25% to less than 1%?
