Religious Accommodation at York

Americans would not have heard of this but recently at a university here in Canada called York University (one of the better universities) fulfilled a request form a student that he not have to interact with female students due to religious reasons. It is an online course with an in-class component that would have required him to work with other students. The professor refused to do it at first but was then forced to accept it. This decision instantly gained a lot of criticism from various critics including federal Justice Minister Peter McKay, calling it sexist and religious accommodation going too far. This has sparked debate about how far will reli8gious accommodation go.

I have to agree with the critics and the government, this is pure sexism and it has taken religious accommodation way too far. The York University staff should have just thrown the request back in the student's face and if he doesn't like it he doesn't have to go to university or preferably move to a country where that attitude is more tolerated. I would like to know what you think about this and if indeed religious accommodation has gone too far.

I don't see you point. Why is it discrimination to allow someone to study at home? And would anyone think he knows better, what another's religion requires or forbids?

It is sexism to allow a student to not participate in his classes because for religious reasons they do not want to interact with female students. It is religious accommodation taken too far.

Hopefully it does end there and progresses no further.

"Give them an inch...." Their way of looking at things does not always mesh with ours. Okay, I understand that. However, would we be given the same consideration in their country if we disagreed with their rules? Or would we be told "this is the way we do things here...you either adapt or leave." I believe we know the answer. I haven't received an answer, though, as to why we should always be expected to back down, when it happens in our country! Fair is fair!

Greetings, Carjosse. :2wave:

"Religious reasons", okay. So what are they and what is the scriptural precedent?

That seems a quaint idea and seems to harken back to the cultures of the Old Worlds most of our ancestors fled to escape just such politics.

How about female students? Is college an appropriate place for them? Or do you think that females should stay barefoot, pregnant and ignorant?

College is not an appropriate place for a woman. Women and Men have different roles in society, and no part of a woman's role requires a college education. Hell, a large percentage of men don't need a college education, or shouldn't, for the work they do.

I realize this is about a Canadian school, but since this forum discusses anything and everything, I am thinking of just how backwards this is from the usual arguments seen in here....For instance we not too long ago just got done arguing not only why a Cross that had been up on a hill near SD Cali, for 100 years. We have a thread in here now about a statue in OK being pushed of Satan's right hand demon to be erected in the town square. We have argued how, and why there should be a separation of any sort of religious, or perceived religious act, and school. Yet now we argue whether a school in Northern neighbors land should be cowing to Islamic religious dictate? Give me a break.

The Dean was dead wrong, and should be removed, and Europe and Canada needs to grow a pair when dealing with this creeping Islamism and tell them to pound sand.

The USA is not an appropriate place for a prejudiced, woman hating, misogynist.

But, unfortunately we have more than a few of them here.

Canada is a country that allows students to bring knives to school for their religious beliefs. Really some of the **** that is acceptable in Canada is mindblowing and I'm sure you guys have the same view about Americans.

I sure do , but I believe that the misogynist that I replied to is in the USA.

For anyone who doesn't know a 'misogynist' is "a man who hates every bone in a woman's body except his".

Silly me, see I thought we were supposed to address the topic, not attack other posters, at least that is what I have always been told....

How do you think we feel about concealed carry? You can carry bladed weapons here like you can carry guns in the U.S..

We are far more secular than you Americans and bowing to religious pressure of any kind is frowned upon by the government. Our schools are secular and will remain so. The student's religion was never revealed either, he may have been Jewish.

It is blatant sexism which has no place in modern society.

One thing for sure...bullets are faster than people wielding knifes.

I can only hope the same for the US...but it won't happen in my lifetime.

Religions has no place in government and the sate must remain purely secular. Quebec seems to be doing the best so far expect they may be taking it a bit too far.

There are religious schools in Canada.

Yes there are, private but we do have public catholic schools in Ontario and they should be ended but at least judges drew the line there. You will never see Jewish or Islamic schools and Catholic schools will eventually end.

Who is to say? I think anyone that wants to forbid people living as they like is too illiberal and certainly not somebody I would vote for no matter how much I liked his/her other policies.

If the student doesn't like it he can transfer ..... No doubt the student in question is a Muslim.

This would be no different if a student demanded that he was in an all white class (or all black class)..... It's disgusting - furthermore it's demanding that the university in question partake in segregation.

I suppose there is nothing stopping the kid from attempting to form a study group that relies on notes to pass the class but that would be stupid too...

heh, heh....Doubt it....But, have you ever been to a US campus? I doubt you would say that they bow to religion if you had.

Let me go as far as to say that "Religions" are weapons of mass distraction and has no place anywhere, but that's just my itty bitty opinion.

I keep my religion and faith to myself until people try to challenge religion as a whole - that's when I get upset.

What I believe is no ones business other than me, my family and my friends who practice a long with me...

There is no need to clump all religion into one "delusion" as most non-believers would call it. That would just be ignorant.
