Religious Accommodation at York

Except at one point in history, allowing women into universities was a political issue, was it not? I don't agree with going backwards with our PC as this seems to try to do, but to claim all attempts at equality through politics is bad is pretty stupid as well.

Yes it is, the dean made the decision, it was refused by other staff.

It is founded on hate speech laws. Christopher Hitchens specifically talked about this in Canada, in 2006. These laws open up to everyone being at the will of the protected group. So Hitchens argues how that turns into the group saying, "you put your hand on our bible or else we'll call the hate speech police."

Personally I think the PC department personnel involved need to be fired and publicly ridiculed for being ignorant, discriminating asses. There's no place in higher education for ignorance much less people who support discrimination...IMHO.

The "intolerance for the intolerant" speech that swirls around these debates should be refined and militarized in preparation for the oncoming robot apocalypse. It will be our greatest weapon.

The professor has to inform that he did not have to participate with female students, he received three orders form the dean to do so. This dean should be fired immediately.

The public and government reaction was the exact opposite. The dean of the university is the idiot.

This guy could probably find a university more to his taste in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

I don't know about the US, but here in Canada the Human Rights Commissions all over the country are running amok and are in serious need of oversight and control. Their decisions are becoming progressively unfathomable.

I wouldn't go that far, but it is problematic that the decision was taken absent a complaint from the student.

I would note, however, that there is a very active Muslim community at York University and there have been several incidents of "unrest" and/or tension in the student body along religious lines. Clearly, the more religious accommodation is practiced in a secular education environment, the more it will be demanded.
