Religious Accommodation at York

Equal opportunity will always be in jeopardy when everything has to be second guessed through a PC filter. PC tries to make everyone happy, and no one can do that.

This is anti-PC thread and the government decision was anti-PC.

All out universities allow women as it should be and post-secondary education should be partly funded by government in order to maintain standards and equal opportunity.

Agreed, but do any of them allow segregation of sexes?

Except at one point in history, allowing women into universities was a political issue, was it not? I don't agree with going backwards with our PC as this seems to try to do, but to claim all attempts at equality through politics is bad is pretty stupid as well.

The government yes, the school no....According to CJ the school reported this to the schools PC dept....is that wrong?

Yes it is, the dean made the decision, it was refused by other staff.

What, the government declaring that religious accommodation has gone too far?

It is founded on hate speech laws. Christopher Hitchens specifically talked about this in Canada, in 2006. These laws open up to everyone being at the will of the protected group. So Hitchens argues how that turns into the group saying, "you put your hand on our bible or else we'll call the hate speech police."

You don't make any bloody sense, you know nothing about our laws and you are completely off-topic.

I am referencing Hitchens, so you think he doesn't make any sense.

There's more to the story here than is being portrayed in the OP.

1. The student requested the accommodation, the professor declined, and the student accepted that decision - all done in a highly professional manner.

2. The professor informed the "politically correct department" at the university and the legal and human rights toadies decided that Canadian law required that the student be accommodated. The professor refused. The student did not appeal the decision of the professor, he was not at fault - the PC clowns decided they needed to flex their muscles and so intervened on the part of a student that didn't ask for their intervention.

3. To my knowledge, the professor has not given in, but perhaps there's new information I've missed.

4. As the professor says, he has a daughter and he would not want her to attend any university where she may be segregated from the learning environment/structure simply because of antiquated, sexist, religious nonsense.

Thanks for the clarification, John.

Personally I think the PC department personnel involved need to be fired and publicly ridiculed for being ignorant, discriminating asses. There's no place in higher education for ignorance much less people who support discrimination...IMHO.

The "intolerance for the intolerant" speech that swirls around these debates should be refined and militarized in preparation for the oncoming robot apocalypse. It will be our greatest weapon.

I need to ask how?

Your original post for this thread. They are at the whim of the religion because they will be seen as espousing hatred for the religion if they disagree with it.

I love robots.

The professor has to inform that he did not have to participate with female students, he received three orders form the dean to do so. This dean should be fired immediately.

The public and government reaction was the exact opposite. The dean of the university is the idiot.

Americans would not have heard of this but recently at a university here in Canada called York University (one of the better universities) fulfilled a request form a student that he not have to interact with female students due to religious reasons. It is an online course with an in-class component that would have required him to work with other students. The professor refused to do it at first but was then forced to accept it. This decision instantly gained a lot of criticism from various critics including federal Justice Minister Peter McKay, calling it sexist and religious accommodation going too far. This has sparked debate about how far will religious accommodation go.

I have to agree with the critics and the government, this is pure sexism and it has taken religious accommodation way too far. The York University staff should have just thrown the request back in the student's face and if he doesn't like it he doesn't have to go to university or preferably move to a country where that attitude is more tolerated.
I would like to know what you think about this and if indeed religious accommodation has gone too far.

This article is from the Globe and Mail and can be found here or any other Canadian news site for that matter.

It does sound like religious accommodation went a little too far.

This guy could probably find a university more to his taste in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

I do not believe it is the place of the Federal Government to be involved in education at all. I never have and never will.
Nor do I believe that college is an appropriate place for a Lady.

How about female students? Is college an appropriate place for them? Or do you think that females should stay barefoot, pregnant and ignorant?

I don't know about the US, but here in Canada the Human Rights Commissions all over the country are running amok and are in serious need of oversight and control. Their decisions are becoming progressively unfathomable.

I wouldn't go that far, but it is problematic that the decision was taken absent a complaint from the student.

I would note, however, that there is a very active Muslim community at York University and there have been several incidents of "unrest" and/or tension in the student body along religious lines. Clearly, the more religious accommodation is practiced in a secular education environment, the more it will be demanded.

Let's face it, John. Governments around the globe have become monsters that we can't kill.

Hopefully it does end there and progresses no further.
