Sharon was not a man of peace, but at the time, Israel needed a warrior as Prime Minister.
Sharon wasn't the PM at the time, he was PM ~20 years later

I am talking about the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Sharon was Chief of the Army then, and it was his plan to invade Lebanon, after a series of rocket attacks, and shootings by Palestinian gunmen.

Actually he was defence minister and lied to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. Sharon found excuse after excuse to extend the advance further than the 40 km that was agreed on. Everything collapsed on Sharon when his Christian terrorists were allowed and with IDF help, to commit one of the worst acts of terror in human history. And ultimately his actions killed the Prime Minister since he entered a deep depression when he realized Sharon had played him...

Sharon was the Minister of Defense. "His" plan was authorized by the government which was led by Menachem Begin. The Chief of the army was Rafael Eithan (Sharon was never Chief of the Army, he was a General).

What Pete said. Sharon way over-stepped the agreed remit of the invasion without Begin's approval. This came out some years later. Sharon sued the journalists who made the allegation, and lost the case. Here's the story:
Israel's current prime minister (Sharon) - 20 years ago, the defense minister of a nation at war - deceived the reigning prime minister, the government and the entire public.

    Chomsky gets it right:
Chomsky is an anti Semitic tool, that hasn't been right on anything in his life. No one takes his communist arse seriously. He should stick to linguistics, and leave politics to smart people.

I guess the fact that he says that Arafat is in hell too means that he's anti-Palestinian as well.

So what is your point? That he is adept at covering his anti Semitic screed by adding in Arafat's name? What a joke...In the same post he cites Chomsky for God's sake...That man is drivel personified. You can roll your eyes all you want, but we know the truth of people in here and where they stand....Too many posts over too many years not to.

whether or not Sharon's intentions were different than what he declared then to be at the beginning of the war don't change the fact that everything done was approved by the government.
