WASHINGTON — U.S. employers added a scant 74,000 jobs in December, the fewest in three years. The disappointing gain ends 2013 on a weak note and could raise questions about the economy's recent strength.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate fell from 7 percent in November to 6.7 percent, the lowest level since October 2008. But the drop occurred mostly because more Americans stopped looking for jobs. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively searching for work.

you guys know the drill. the economy is (awesome!) (horrible!), and it is the (accomplishment) (failure) of (___________.)

It is what it is. The fact that 40% of population is choosing not to work (and thus not pay federal taxes), and 10 million people claim they cant find a job, is alarming, however. Especially when we're spending 2 trillion a year on income support. And theres 4 million job openings.

The short article is a good, quick read.
It beats the hell out of a negative GDP and losing 750,000 jobs a month as we were doing 5 years ago.
Enough factors were listed to explain the numbers.
Let's hope and pray for a change in the way the two ruling parties work together, the real impediment to further growth IMHO .

Saying that 40% of the population is CHOOSING not to work,
saying that people are CHOOSING not to work, is insulting to the millions of Americans that are LOOKING for work,
especially the Veterans who have also lost their unemployment extensions.
10 million people claim they cant find a job, is alarming, however.
I'm all for means-testing, and have put out an elaborate means-testing program using retired like me to do it.
What is your solution?
Especially when we're spending 2 trillion a year on income support.
Please break this 2 trillion a year on "income support" down with links.
And theres 4 million job openings.
As well, please back up your claim that there are 4 million job openings, not that I don't believe you .

That figure is close to the figure on bls.gov site which listed job openings as 3.9 million in October. It also doesn't say what type of jobs or where. But the number is pretty valid on its own.

With a standard that low, how could we possibly fail? This economy is AWESOME!

If you are a carpenter in TX, the fact that a welding job in KS, radio broadcasting job in KY or medical billing job in NY is open makes little difference in your job seeking quest. BTW, $2 trillion is over half of the federal budget - care to document how that as being spent on income support?

I'm tired of hearing about the drop in the unemployment rate as a "positive sign". Liberals will spin anything. The effective unemployment rate is closer to 20 percent, and far higher in certain regions.

92 million people in the U.S. are not working. Period. Whatever the various reasons, they aren't. And Democrats want to "up the punishment" for those that are working by raising their taxes more and more.

A workforce this out of work can't sustain a government hell-bent on spending wildly beyond its means.

There is a huge swath of people that simply won't work no matter what opportunity is put before them. The DNC masterfully exploits and draws its lifeblood from it.

Except thats theres 200,000 construction job openings. And no reason people cant retrain or move.

2.4 trillion spent on 'human resources'

LOl !!

Wow. 5 years in with 70k jobs last moneth and your'e back to blaming Bush.

Unbeleiveable.

Well, actually there are reasons they cannot move. If they are upside down on their home mortgage, they can't move. Just one example.
Not all company's are willing to retrain - especially for skilled workers. Construction is skilled labor - you can't just hire someone who's been doing an office job for 5 years and make them into a welder or set I beams in concrete.

Sounds like excuses to me.

If they're upside down on their mortgage, it's no excuse it's a reality. They sell their home owing thousands or tens of thousands. How many people do you know who have 10 or 15 grand liquid cash they can throw at something without blinking? Certainly no one who's looking for a construction job unless they hit the lottery or had a rich dead uncle leave them money.

Another reality is, company's who have the job openings are not going to hand hold office workers for the next 9 months while they learn their job.

Well earlier today.....they were talking about how a lot of those jobs are part time. Seasonal and Low wage earning type jobs.

Yet for some reason the Lib Economists are now saying for their opposites, that their pessimism isn't showing the whole story.....that issue on how the left likes to use those numbers based off of what employers said they would be hiring for the beginning of 2014. Shows them for how wrong they are. Many companies are saying they wont be hiring what they stated and as a matter of fact, for some. They will be laying off people or and closing business.

Oh baby ... a well oiled machine, is what it is ...
obama - economy jalopy.jpg

Huh, pretty different from the "expected' job numbers.

I wonder who obama is going to blame on this one?

i mean if you look the over all down trend in the unemployment rate is directly due to people not looking for work. it has nothing at all do to with them being hired.
the employor mandate kicks in this year as well so any highering that would be done is getting put off.

heck my company is cutting back this year in an attemp not to fire or lay people off. the reason being some economy other to do with existing contracts.
other parts is money they have had to pay out for regulations and such.

obama has no one to blame but himself. this is what happens when you wage a war on prosperity.

That'd be the 'Hope and Change' express, right there.
He's got that Flintstone self propulsion thing going but he juuuuuust can't seem to get it goin'... oh well, there are priorities and you know he's been rooting for it ...

You're speaking, I assume, out of ignorance. Go buy a house for 250K, have it lose it's value to 120K with an assessed value of 125K and tell me how willing you are to eat the difference, sell and move when you're paying $1,800 a month including taxes and insurance.

Im willing to do whatever it takes. I dont make excuses.

That makes no sense. You would further go into debt to work a job you could never repay your debt with?

That's not an excuse alright but that isn't very bright either.
