U.S. economy adds just 74,000 jobs in December

WASHINGTON — U.S. employers added a scant 74,000 jobs in December, the fewest in three years. The disappointing gain ends 2013 on a weak note and could raise questions about the economy's recent strength.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate fell from 7 percent in November to 6.7 percent, the lowest level since October 2008. But the drop occurred mostly because more Americans stopped looking for jobs. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively searching for work.

It is what it is. The fact that 40% of population is choosing not to work (and thus not pay federal taxes), and 10 million people claim they cant find a job, is alarming, however. Especially when we're spending 2 trillion a year on income support. And theres 4 million job openings.

The short article is a good, quick read.
It beats the hell out of a negative GDP and losing 750,000 jobs a month as we were doing 5 years ago.
Enough factors were listed to explain the numbers.
Let's hope and pray for a change in the way the two ruling parties work together, the real impediment to further growth IMHO .

Saying that 40% of the population is CHOOSING not to work,
saying that people are CHOOSING not to work, is insulting to the millions of Americans that are LOOKING for work,
especially the Veterans who have also lost their unemployment extensions.
10 million people claim they cant find a job, is alarming, however.
I'm all for means-testing, and have put out an elaborate means-testing program using retired like me to do it.
    What is your solution?
Especially when we're spending 2 trillion a year on income support.
Please break this 2 trillion a year on "income support" down with links.
And theres 4 million job openings.
As well, please back up your claim that there are 4 million job openings, not that I don't believe you .

That figure is close to the figure on bls.gov site which listed job openings as 3.9 million in October. It also doesn't say what type of jobs or where. But the number is pretty valid on its own.

With a standard that low, how could we possibly fail? This economy is AWESOME!

If you are a carpenter in TX, the fact that a welding job in KS, radio broadcasting job in KY or medical billing job in NY is open makes little difference in your job seeking quest. BTW, $2 trillion is over half of the federal budget - care to document how that as being spent on income support?

Re: U.S. economy adds just 74,000 jobs in December

I'm tired of hearing about the drop in the unemployment rate as a "positive sign". Liberals will spin anything. The effective unemployment rate is closer to 20 percent, and far higher in certain regions.

92 million people in the U.S. are not working. Period. Whatever the various reasons, they aren't. And Democrats want to "up the punishment" for those that are working by raising their taxes more and more.

A workforce this out of work can't sustain a government hell-bent on spending wildly beyond its means.

There is a huge swath of people that simply won't work no matter what opportunity is put before them. The DNC masterfully exploits and draws its lifeblood from it.
