Ohio killer to get 2-drug injection untried in US

The problem with this line of thinking regarding this individual's suffering is precisely in applying the sentiment to the individual. For good or for bad, and because we are a collective society whether we like it or not, the appropriateness of any punishment needs to be thought of in regards to all potential participants, not just the ones we deem particularly unworthy.
I would prefer the execution (where used) be swift and sure. There are lots of ways that can happen. It doesnt appear this individual 'suffered'. If he did...its hard for me to care.

A long drop with a short rope done well is swift and sure. The executioners bullet...same. Im all for giving them the right concoction and make them feel high high high and then drop the injection on them. One last jam session with Willy Nelson should do the trick. But again...

really hard to be overly concerned about this guy.

Vets euthanize animals every day.

Other than the weight difference calculation, how can the state screw up with a human?

I hear you about the lack of concern.

The number of death row inmates who have escaped and killed again, or killed prison guards, is insignificant compared to the number who have been released when it turns out they weren't guilty.

Please provide a credible source for this claim.

yeah they should bring back the chair. or hanging. the Ohio AG noted that while a murderer should not face cruel and unusual punishment, he is not entitled to a Painless execution

I would like to think that Americans wouldn't want a painful execution for the condemned, simply because we are not them.

Ugh. So as an update....it took this guy 15 minutes to die, in convulsions.

How incompetent are they? This is just ridiculous. It's not like you can give him an overdose for God's sake.

It was a combination of a powerful sedative mixed with a powerful painkiller. It might have been the most humane execution (from the point of view of the executed) in all of history. How do you know it wasn't?

I never said it wasnt.

Hanging is a very quick death-far more merciful than say the brutal gas chamber

as the Ohio AG noted-the prisoner is entitled to a cruel free death but not a completely pain free one

That's right--because it's about who we are, not who he was.

From CNN 4 days ago:

Both the length of time it took for McGuire to die and his gasping are not typical for an execution, said Howard Nearman, an anesthesiologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.

...Speaking on behalf of McGuire's legal team, attorney Allen Bohnert called on the governor to impose a moratorium on future executions because of what took place Thursday.

"At this point, it is entirely premature to consider this execution protocol to be anything other than a failed, agonizing experiment," he said in a statement.

"The people of the State of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in all of our names. Ohio, like its citizens, must follow the law. The state has failed." Controversial execution in Ohio uses new drug combination - CNN.com

There is going to continue to be debate over what constitutes "cruel and unusual punishment" until a satisfactory new drug combo is figured out.

Aren't pigs still being slaughtered by a bolt between the eyes? Why not this?

When they passed the eighth amendment, they were hanging people. So it must not have been consider cruel and unusual.

the point is, his family is all upset because he didn't just fade away peacefully. I am just wondering if they ever game a second's thought to the manner in which his victim died.

dude got what he deserved. the only sympathy I have for the family is that they had such a piece of **** for a father.

The point is he was in captivity, no longer a threat to anyone, and what do you want this country to represent? If it's petty vengeance and torture, we're no better than saddam hussein and other dictators who do the same to helpless inmates.

You clearly don't see that this will only expedite an end to the death penalty altogether. Clearly violates cruel and unusual punishment.

I dont oppose the death penalty but a lethal injection of drugs that has never been tested seems wrong.

Wanna' volunteer?

Edit: It can't be that difficult. Heavy sedation and a drug to stop the heart or paralyze the muscles. Slam dunk.

It is cruel to them-one less voter

That's okay, everyone knows the dead vote Democrat anyway. Even former Republicans, once dead vote Democrat.

Just curious, has there ever been a dead guy convicted of voter fraud, or is htis just another one of those RW things?

To convict someone of voter fraud you must first know who voted. The fact that a vote was recorded as being made by a corpse means that someone else voted in that person's place - to convict someone for that "fraud" requires knowing the unknown.
