Passengers stranded on a scientific expedition ship off Antarctica will soon be airlifted off the vessel.
IT began as a journey to "investigate the impact of changing climate" and to "use the subantarctic islands as thermometers of climatic change" but more than 70 global warming activists, journalists and crew, led by University of NSW professor of climate change Chris Turney, are now trapped by millions of tonnes of ice after their ship was caught in freezing conditions off the Antarctic coast.

Denier! Cough, cough. It's not funny. No, not funny at all. Oh, all right. It's hilarious. And they're pretty confident that that tomorrow is going to arrive. They are in the prediction business, after all. Best stick to something with the preponderance of evidence on their side.

I don't know why they're talking about an air rescue, they could just wait for the ice to melt.

Should happen any day now. Maybe we should send more ships just to see how many can get stuck. If they keep records on this, the trip could set some kind of record after all. I'd wait on the helicopters a while.

It's dated tomorrow because where they are IS tomorrow. It was midnight in Sydney at 1300 GMT

I just LOVE stories like this.. :)

Well, that puts to rest the notion that tomorrow never comes. Hell, it's already here. That puts procrastination in an entirely new light.

No one likes being wrong, but these folks must be really pissed off about being wrong...lol!

A friend told me about it. Predictably, it's not mentioned too much (if at all) in the US media.

I think what happened was that the AP picked up the story as just a ship stuck in the ice, and the rest of the media picked up the AP feed, BUT, then someone actually practiced journalism and found out that they were all global warming researchers... Ah crap.. :)

Except of course, they're not. It's being pushed as that by the denier camp, but many of the group are paying tourists, retracing the travels af an Australian explorer of 100 years ago.

Speaking of denial. :D

“Somewhere far, far to the south where it is summer, a group of global warming scientists are trapped in the Antarctic ice,” read a post on the site. “If you missed the irony of that situation, it is because much of the mainstream media has glossed over that rather inconvenient bit of hilarity.”

'Stuck in our own experiment': Leader of trapped team insists polar ice is melting | Fox News

Now don't change your argument to mimic the leader of the expedition (that this actually proves what they were researching). Your argument is that this "cruise" had nothing to do with GW researchers.

Really?

74 researchers in the group... Here is a statement by one in National Geographics:

2. Why are we recreating the trip Mawson took one hundred years ago?

One hundred years after Mawson's journey, we still don't know much about the Antarctic.

Plus, the century mark for Mawson's trip serves as a marker of exploration. The current crop of explorers are hoping to document some of the same data and compare them to Mawson's numbers, "using the twist of modern technology," Turney told National Geographic earlier this month.

As may be expected, global warming might play a role in this, he suggests, particularly with respect to melted ice in the East Antarctic.

The group will also test the salinity of the ocean, take censuses of local bird populations, drill into the ice to extract mineral data, and send drones to map Antarctica's Commonwealth Bay.

They are looking for evidence...

Who's on That Russian Ship Stuck on Antarctic Ice? And Why?

Twenty of the number are crew, and half the passengers seem to be journalists!

"I am with the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by climate scientist Chris Turney of the University of New South Wales. We are following a century-old expedition led by the British-Australian Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson, who landed in Commonwealth Bay in January 1912. We – a group of scientists and paying members of the public acting as science assistants – plan to repeat many of Mawson's scientific measurements in order to understand how this pristine landscape has changed over the past 100 years.... "

Antarctic expedition: still icebound

Do you think the ship they're on or the helicopters are electric? I mean, I'm sure they wouldn't want anyone using fossil fuels on their behalf.

You know its a royal embarrassment to the left when the Networks fail to disclose the highly relevent "scientific"objective of this mission.

Initially it was a "Russian ship trapped in Ice", now the truth is slowly eaking out.

Serves them right.

These "Scientist" lost all credibillity a long time ago when they teamed up with the Political party that promises "if you pay more for your energy ( via carbon taxes and arbitrary new regs on Coal fired plants ), we'll save the world ".

Hillarious.....let them cool their heals while they're filling in their Hockey Stick coloring books.

Whats even funnier is WHY their stuck in that ice.

No doubt their decision to head out and strand themselves and their pasengers was based on extensive and objective "peer reviewed scientific analysis". Sure, no way we'll get trapped in Sea Ice, the "Planet has a Temperature"

Lol....How much do you want to bet, after the Chinese crews on the rescuing Ice breakers finished communicating with the "scientist" ( you know, after "over and out" ) they sat around joking about what a bunch of dumbasses those people were.

A change in wind direction piling sea ice against the coast, trapping them, is a hazard of Antarctic exploration. The funny part is the rush of the ignorant to make something out of nothing in pursuit of their denier dogma.

Sure thats a common hazard of "artic exploration".

Happens all the time. So when exactly was the last time a ship load full of "climate scientist " and their "assistants" ( boy friend, girl friends, etc ) were trapped by an accute formation of Sea Ice ?

Since its a obvious hazard of "artic exploration" it shouldn't be too dificult to do a bit of historic research and come up with the last Climate study boat stranded by Sea Ice....

There is only one poster in denial in this thread, and he has a mouse in his avatar.

Look if you people gave a rats ass about the climate , you would be doing everything in your power to uninvolve your party in everything from Climate research to the discovery and production of alternative fuels.

The Progressives have done more damage to the legitimate study of our climate and the search for alternative energies than any " climate denier " ever could do.

I should thank you really . The lefts involvment has made carbon taxes in America less and less likely.

Its nothing new, you guys tend to screw EVERYTHING up you touch.

As soon as your politicians put a price ( a Tax ) on our worlds survival you lost all credibillity. As soon as your party decided to demagogue a scientific issue and use use that to justify arbitrary cost increases on everyone who pays for fuel and or energy you were on your own.

I think your anger is misdirected. All we climate deniers can really do is sit back and laugh as your party turns the issue of climate change into another dishonest Liberal objective.

Yes, but as Climatologist they should have known this was possible and actually looked at weather models like the GFS, Euro, UKMet or any of them and they'd know what the weather was really doing. This is Climatology/Meteorology 101.

And to think.. 1/3 to 1/2 (depending on the model) the US will have lows below zeros and highs barely in the single digits next week. It will be record cold in the US next week because of the same **** that caused them to get stuck.

Speaking of the Euro model, has anyone else noticed now that when the weather channel does their extended forecasts for certain storms they have the U.S. model followed by the Euro model and they are different on every occasion I have seen this. I haven't given this any thought or I would tune in a few day later to see which model got it right. I will have to start paying more attention to it.
