Northern California counties revive an old idea for a breakaway state - latimes.com

That is right. There is a bigger push than ever from the northern counties of CA to succeed.
They have grown tired of the crap coming out of sacremento and want their own state.

This is more difficult than what it seems. it would take a vote from the CA government and a congressional act which
more than likely will fail in the state first.

they are not the only counties in a state wanting to split. counties in CO want the same due to the same reasons.

We're setting down a dark path if something like this was to go through. As a country, state, a community, we should be finding ways to unite us... not put in more divisions.

I grew up in Jefferson. This sort of talk has been going on for a long time and will continue to go on for a long time.

Meanwhile, most people don't really care.

Re: State of Northern CA

The debate over the State of Jefferson often boils down to a balance sheet. Laufer's tally from the state Department of Finance concluded that California's four northernmost counties take in $20 million or so more per year from Sacramento than they provide.
At a recent Board of Supervisors forum, Tehama County Chief Administrator Bill Goodwin estimated a loss of $5 million in public works funding annually and a 75% drop in education funding were the county to join in, and he hadn't begun to calculate the impact on health and social service programs.
Then there are logistics: What to do about the state prison in Crescent City? Who gets the Caltrans equipment left behind? And what of steep out-of-state tuition Jeffersonians would be forced to pay in California's higher education system?

Let them go.

that is the problem the liberal controled congress of CA is ignoring people in the north part of the state. same as in CO. those people feel they have little choice left.
the people in charge are passing laws that they do not agree with and tehre is nothing they can do about it.

i had only thought about once moving to CA and that was because i applied for a job with a game company and was going to earn about 6 figures a year.

Uh-huh. They were willing to pay an awful lot for someone who can't spell. But hey I guess if you succeed it's all that matters.

strawmans aren't arguments either and if you had a sleeping 1 year old in your lap you would find it difficult to type as well.

I fully support this. It would mean two more democratic senators. Additionally, California is way under-represented in Washington. Why should a state like Wyoming or Idaho, with less than a million people have the same number of senators as California with 25 million people?

You obviously don't have a clue about California politics. Northern California is more liberal than Southern California.

Because it is the State that is represented through Senators. All States are supposedly equal so they all get the same amount of Senators.

But you probably knew that and chose to ignore it.

Because you don't understand the difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate?

Obviously YOU don't have a clue. The map goes like this the Orange ,San Diego, desert rural, the San Joaquin valley, Northern California, minus parts of Sacramento and Stockton are all pretty solidly conservative areas. The coast and the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco are pretty solidly liberal. The liberals out number the conservatives right now by about 1 million population wise.PoliticalGeogFigure-2_web.jpg

Seems this area of the state isn't able to support itself, so how's that going to work for them?

You think people from Tehama, Glenn or Siskiyou counties are liberal?

Menocino county is liberal, Chico is fairly liberal, parts of Humbolt county, maybe, but the area as a whole? No way.

Have you ever lived in that part of the state? I grew up there, and no freaking way is most of this proposed state liberal.

Why does it seem like that to you?
If separated they would then be able to determine where their taxes go and to that which it wouldn't.
For all you know they would have a surplus at the same tax rate because they would not be funding all the liberal crap.
Just saying.

The WHOLE STATE cant support itself.

California is the typical Liberal Cluster ****, as their Liberal Governor claims a budget "Surplus" but then refuses to include their nearly 500 Billion in unfunded State pensions and Health Care cost.

Lies and stupid gullible voters that believe them.

THATS California.

:doh first the senate represents the states. since all states are equal they each get 2 senators a piece.

The house represents the people and that is why CA has the most house reps in office. i think they have a total of like 50. you can't have less than 1 representative so every state gets at least 1 rep in the house.

this is basic US history.

You obviously don't have a clue about California politics. Northern California is more liberal than Southern California. .

:doh umm yes the further north you get in CA the more conservative you get. except for the coastal regions. further south you get SF, LA etc which are the liberal bastions of CA.

The WHOLE STATE cant support itself.

i agree and half their problem is the 1m different social programs that they have. they waste billions of dollars a year on stupid crap that the money could be better used elsewhere.

which is the problem because the northern half of the state has no say in it and are having to pay for it. probably why they are struggling to begin with.

it is funny CA has some of the most expensive and highest state taxes out there and they are still broke. they are losing a ton of business to places like texas where corporations can operate cheaper. the whole state will end up like detroit.

Re: State of Northern CA

No...I understand the difference....I just think it is a severely flawed system...when 2 Senators represent 25 million and 2 Senators represent less than a million. This is why I support California splitting. It would at least cut down the differential somewhat...and it would be two more liberal democratic senators.

You got what they are representing wrong.

No...I understand quite well. As a Californian, you are probably aware that the orange areas on your map are the sparsely populated counties. Anyone in California knows that while both Southern California and Northern California trend more liberal than conservative, Northern California is definitely more liberal than Southern California.

Yes...it actually is. How many people do you think live in Tehama, Glenn or Siskiyou counties? There is no doubt that Northern California, if it were a state in and of itself, would be solidly dark blue.

Re: State of Northern CA

True..the Senators represent the state, but they also represent the people in that state.
Only by proxy of representing the State the people reside in.

Actually, Shasta county has far more people than either Mendicino or Humbolt.

That's only because the south has been stealing from the north in that state forever. My grandmother was all over splitting the state when they brought in the central valley water project. It's still going on, when there are drought conditions, the south gets the water and the north lives under restriction.
