Why did the federal govt get involved in local crime?
If I am not mistaken, he can be found guilty in Federal court and also prosecuted under state laws. This is truly known as "throwing the book" at someone. And so he deserves.

    Here we go:

The "separate sovereigns" exception to double jeopardy arises from the dual nature of the American Federal-State system, one in which states are sovereigns with plenary power that have relinquished a number of enumerated powers to the Federal government. Double jeopardy attaches only to prosecutions for the same criminal act by the same sovereign, but as separate sovereigns, both the federal and state governments can bring separate prosecutions for the same act.

Yeah, being railroaded or not, it's hard to have any sympathy for a guy who attacked a 79 year old man

Yeah, it's a hate crime. I wish the media would stop covering this stupid **** so that less racist idiot assholes would learn about it.

And before the angry beehive army attacks, yes, i believe that it's a hate crime when any racial group does it.

What about the hundreds of black kids that did the same thing? I'm sorry, but there is a double standard.

look, I agree how the state and population generally reacts to crimes involving people of divergent races is often approached with a double standard, but do any of the other incidences you mention above involve a video of someone saying akin to"I'm going to knock out a white person"? If not, then you have a rather weak claim to this specific case

    Here we go:
Yes I understand that but what makes this crime so important that the feds have to come in to charge?

It is a local assault, nothing more. there is no federal jurisdiction at all.

Somebody wants to make a name for themselves good or bad.

is there something off topic you read that you want to discuss? was holder even mentioned in the OP? what as he said?
Maybe it was in the video i didnt watch the video all i read in the OP was this

"Hate crimes tear at the fabric of entire communities," U.S. Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels said Thursday in a Justice Department statement announcing the charge against Barrett. "As always, the Civil Rights Division will work with our federal and state law enforcement partners to ensure that hate crimes are identified and prosecuted, and that justice is done."

    Maybe that answers your question?
