Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet. [W:38:54]

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Never heard of BET have you?

Can you find a single poor black person on that channel? Again, this goes back to subculture. BET doesn't have a single show with poor black people at the forefront. I mean, they make money off catastrophes that affect the black community. They make money off music started in poor black community. However, are they representative of 40% of black community in their image? Nope. What do they portray? Well, they do what MTV does and sprinkle in some ghettoness (think Jersey Shore). If you honestly think they're making money off acting ghetto you got something else coming. What are their comedy/reality shows about? Middle class black families, middle class black professionals, upper class black people. Then, they give you an hour of 106'n'Park (is that show still on?) The last time they had a show that even came close to showing black people in any real representative % of social/economic/cultural state was when they had late night reruns of Oz in the early 2000s.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Then what exactly is a slap in the face about a nun smoking weed (his picture)?

You think that would be a wildly accepted imagery within the church, or congregation? If so, you have NO understanding of religion at all.

So she pretty much sucks as a pr person.

If more Nuns smoked a joint every now and again, maybe they'd go easy on whacking kids with rulers.

Are... are we in a church or a congregation? I didn't know SD was even religious.

Oh, so you're not REALLY black unless you live in a ghetto eh....How racist is that?

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Are you reading what is being said? Again, call me when they've made a living out of being ghetto and not just pretending to be. Where are the reality shows in the ghetto? They're usually called documentaries. Where are the TV Guides for Shan'iqua? They have them with Honey Boo Boo. Why not Shani'qua? Again, rednecks are a subculture. Just like hoodrats.

The TV show Cops?

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

The original redneck or the term use to apply to a poor white dirt farmer. Redneck characterized farmers having a red neck caused by sunburn from hours working in the fields. A 1893 definition was poorer inhabitants of the rural districts.

By 1900 rednecks was in common use to designate a political factions inside the Democratic Party comprising poor white farmers in the South.

By the 1970's the term redneck had turned into an offensive slang meaning bigoted, loutish and opposed to modern ways. It became a term to attack southern white conservatives.

But since then Jeff Foxworthy came on the scenes with his redneck jokes and most southerners are once again proud to wear the mantle of redneck. Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy are redneck icons down here.

Seems to build an even better foundation for my post...thanks.

Nope, I'm stating that BET is only interested in representing about 8% of blacks and ignores about 50% of blacks unless they need to sell them the latest Nikes and fitteds.

How is that any different from network TV? Are you saying those are 'the norm' for Americans? Even mainstream? @_@

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

So then your claim is that only white people can be racist?

Blacks cannot be? Can Asians?

Racism requires power. Blacks can certainly be bigots, as can Asians in this country.

It's different in one basic aspect, American media has no problem presenting a diverse positive images of white families. Rosanne? Poor/working class white family for the first few seasons. Full house? Middle class white family. 7th Heaven? Upper middle class white people. Keeping up with the Kardashians? Rich white people. Then you have shows for black people. They range from middle class black people (The Jeffersons, All in The Family, Checking in) to upper class black people (Fresh Prince, Cosby Show) - It's only recently that we have depictions of black people in a state representative of the majority of conditions blacks live in and even those are used for comedy purposes (BET, Any of that gay **** Tyler Perry does, and whatever Eddie Murphy is dressing up as this year). If that's the depiction we're going to get from even our own community I'd rather ignore it because it's representative of a very cherry picked demographic.

HBO is the only channel that does black people right. The Wire? Brilliance. The Shield? Great. Go to 1980s Chicago and tell me how representative Family Matters was of the black community then.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Do you think black people were the only group of people that were ever slaves?

No of course not. In ancient times conquered peoples were routinely enslaved without regard to race. More recently the Chinese Coolies were essentially slave labor. However, that all said, from a historical perspective, white males have had it easier in regards to slavery, bigotry, persecution, and exploitation than any other demographic by a long shot.

Power is not a white only phenomenon.

Never heard that. Do you have a definition that includes that?

Maybe you dont remember Good Times?

Does a blog from DailyKos count?

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

You're stretching. Your source doesn't even say any of that. However:

“Redneck” Origins

Redneck History and Heritage | Save The Redneck

Note: Quit citing revisionists like John Martin. Your selective cherry picking of where the word comes from is telling. Very telling ;)

We're talking the southern meaning of redneck, not what you posted. If we want to look at it through that lens, we can say nigger is okay correct?
The word originally meant black. That's it. It didn't mean what it's evolved into nowadays.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

I know black people who call themselves rednecks
Of course. I do as well. But they, just like most users on this thread, don't know where the term originates.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

It's ultimately a semantics argument. Racism is generally defined as prejudice + power. However, one could also consider racism, bigotry, and prejudice as synonyms depending on how you define the terms.

This Georgia Redneck was just passing on some info.

You might be a redneck if you think a hot tub is a stolen bathroom fixture.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Power is not a white only phenomenon.

In this country it largely is. Arguably if one does live in a majority black city such as Memphis or Birmingham, then you could argue that in that city whites do not hold the majority of political power, but in general power is a white phenomenon in this country. Of course that is not true everywhere, in Zimbabwe for example, Black racism against White Africans is a horrible problem and whites there live under an apartheid like situation.

Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another...or that another race is inferior to another.

That's really it, that's all.

All the rest is how people do or dont address that belief.

Honestly, I wish there was a show like that. I would definitely watch it. I would ask though, why do you think there isn't a show?
IMO, and this is just my opinion, the person who made such a show would have to be beyond reproach. That person couldn't be white lest they be accused of not REALLY knowing what goes on in poor black neighborhoods (there would be some legitimacy to that). It couldn't be person seen as an opportunist that is capitalizing on the plight of blacks in America. There are few people in Hollywood that could do that. I don't think Tyler Perry could do it. He's made a joke of himself. Although he has the background to be able to do it. I don't know if Spike Lee has that in him anymore. John Singleton might be able to but he didn't grow up like most young black men (he had a mother and father who both had jobs and stayed together). Denzel had a rough childhood but, again, had a mother and father. Robert Townsend is one who could do it. 50 Cent would be awesome. It would have to be someone who grew up in poverty without a father IMO. I think that person could make this show and not be criticized for it. They would also be able to tap into their life experience to write the show.

Yeah, that's racist too...You're batting a thousand.....
