Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet. [W:38:54]

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

The communications director for the Internet giant that owns popular websites like Match.com, Dictionary.com, and Vimeo has been fired over "hateful statements" in a tweet that came from her account.

This is all I read. If you work as Com. Dir. for any company that big, you should really watch what the **** it is you say. Specially when one of your websites caters to a multiracial demographic. Some of the other sites that specifically cater to various races owned by her company: OkCupid, SpeedDate, Meetic, SinglePeopleMeet. This company did the right thing just as A&E did by rehiring Phil Robertson. It erred on the side of caution and played to its audience. Firing this woman, however, puts strong emphasis on what I've been telling people for years. Popularity doesn't matter jack **** in media. Sponsors and demographics do. A&E's Duck Dynasty's demographic are rednecks and people of low income. Firing Phil Robertson will simply make sure they stop watching. This woman on the other hand is an executive. Firing her won't damage the company one bit. It will benefit them because the person they're firing is not a bread winner.

In short, getting fired in the media world depends on highly specific conditions. If you have the right audience, the right sponsors and the right income, nobody will care. If viewers of A&E boycotted by not watching any of A&E's other shows, they'd have a shot at cancelling Duck Dynasty. However, as that is unlikely to happen, the show will remain.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Enjoy that first amendment, just don't be shocked when you get jacked on the street for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. A little common sense and courtesy goes a long way.

I don't live scared of anyone. I say what I want. I also am polite and respectful. But I also know humor or attempts at it when I see it. Oh, and been to Chitcago. Iwasnt impressed. So don't tell me how long I wouldn't last there and all that BS yall are known for.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Unfortunately I've known a few white supremacists in my day. They're all worthless garbage.
yea sure. Actually the biggest mistake the Klan ever made was aligning with the skins.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Don't be jealous. She will probably get another job by weeks end.

Being a minor yet to start my post-secondary education I'm really not too jealous of a woman who has publicly disgraced and humiliated herself, and as a result got herself fired from her job. A pretty darn good job at that.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

Yea, its called the First Amendment. Look it up. Also look up growing up and getting a thick skin.

You'll have to show me where it shields you from any consequences whatsoever.

Read the first amendment then you tell me what law she broke. If so, every political commentator in America would have been fired 10 times over.

Then you got a lot of growing up to do. But I see you already align yourself with the progressives so it may never happen for you. Just stay outraged at everything anyone ever says.
Youth, wasted on the young.

She didn't break a law, but that doesn't mean she can't get fired.

Brain cells, unfortunately wasted on you.

I'll be outraged when a comment warrants outrage. I am by no means a true expert in any field, but I am certain that I am a cognitive and respectable human being. Perhaps it is not I that needs to "grow up".

What this women said is offensive and deserves to be fired. Especially when putting the the fact that she was a Public Relations Executive into context.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

The bottom line is that in the real world, asinine comments can cost one their job or a black eye if asinine comments are said on the street to the wrong person. But by all means say what you wan't whenever and wherever you wan't

It was a joke and not even an original joke, but a joke that has been around for decades.

You know even if you try to use my age as a factor it doesn't take away from the fact that you can't or refuse to recognize the racism in her remark.

Adios, Falcata

Sorry, I just cant take a minor seriously. No offence, just cant do it.

That doesn't in any way make it appropriate for a Public Relations Executive of a company to say it.

I can tell you plenty of racist jokes that have been around for decades. Does it really make any of them okay to say in a professional or really any position?

At least you admit that you discriminate.

It makes your opinions about the situation make a lot more sense.

Gee, how in the world did the world survive with the likes of Andrew Dice Clay, George Carlin, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, early Nippsy Russell, early Eddie Murphy. People making all kinds of jokes about everything, every body, every religions, every color, every race.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

As to the OP:

I see both sides of the fence here.

On one hand you have freedom of speech and people should never be punished for stating their opinions or things that they considered as a genuine joke which was never meant to be taken seriously. There really is too much outrage now a days over simple words. As the old child rhyme goes... "Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me."

Then on the other hand we live in reality. Where people are so hilariously thin skinned as to be a sad statement of our society. Where businesses have to worry about such things as the woman in the OP saying something like she did and losing money due to it because in today's society words really are mightier than the sword.

We all discriminate. Its part of the human condition. You will see.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

People have traded in their sense of humor for fake outrage.

Oh I laugh at stupid white folks all the time, and she is all of that!

It is a matter of employment, she should have been a baker or florist instead of a PR, I say again a FREAKIN' PR Exec... :doh

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

I used to say, welcome to the United States of the Offended. Now I guess its Planet Offended.

Re: Woman fired for Aids Africa tweet.

We also don't act upon all of our urges. Another part of the human condition.

Can we bring this back to context of the woman's situation or can we not because you're incapable of holding a debate with someone a 5th of your age?

Most 'freedom of speech' things are not that. She won't have the government waiting to arrest her when she gets back home. However embarrassing your company can have you fired before the smirk leaves your face.

Way I think this is like going to the coffee shop here in SW Oklahoma. White folks say some of THE MOST ignorant things when they think it is 'just among us'...

Given the ignorant things people post on facebook, I am beginning to think that media source turns everyone into silly teens. Flash your boobs or show your ass- seems so many folks just don't get it.... Well this lady probably just did... say that 'joke' among your white friends.... not across the interwebz....
