    Exactly.

How many black/brown people have you met with a red neck?

This is one you just mark up in the "stupid people saying stupid things" category...and yeah...you are in the public eye, you are probably going to lose your job over it.

Both words can be both slang used amongst boys or a derogatory and racist terms.

Do they have to face "systematic discrimination" for it to be insulting to an entire group of people that whom declare themselves Catholic? That you lack the sensitivity to see how that could be wrong makes you no better than the person we are talking about in here. See, you think your nun is funny, and post it regardless of whom it offends, yet rail against a woman that made an off color joke, which btw, I am on record saying I don't think she should have done that, and she got fired, yet you see nothing wrong with your little joke....Telling.

The N word has the same origins as the R word. The difference is that our society wants to play the PC game and say one racist term is cool and one is not. I am not disputing the fact that blacks faced enormous amounts of discrimination. Nor am I attempting to trivialize that. I am bringing attention to the fact that our society has deemed it ok to use one racial slur and not another. I grew up in the rural south as well. Many times I can remember doing things as a kid like throwing rocks at dogs, etc and being told by my parents, grandparents, and neighbors "Stop acting like a redneck". It's a derogatory term that has been made ok by idiots like Foxworthy who don't even know what it feels like to work.
Now you are on to something. At its worst, Redneck is a derogatory term for how one conducts themselves. For example, having a flatbed trailer full of beer cans in your front yard is a redneck thing to do. Starting a brush pile burning with a old tire is a redneck thing to do. Adding on to a trailer is a redneck thing to do. Point being they are all actions on the part of the person being called a redneck. It's similar to being called a jackass. The n-word refers to what a person is. No matter what they do or how they conduct themselves, they will still be referred to by a racist with that term. In that way it is similar to derogatory terms of asians or hispanics.

You're stretching. Your source doesn't even say any of that. However:

    “Redneck” Origins

Where does the term redneck come from, and is it derogatory? It goes back at least to the 1830s where it pops up in the Carolinas to refer to a farmer that works in the sun. Over time, people like listener Richard Ramirez of Fort Worth, Texas, have taken it as a term of pride, denoting their authenticity and work ethic. The reality series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo has furthered the cause with her call to redneckognize! As always, whether such a term is offensive depends on who’s saying it, and to whom. This is part of a complete episode.
Redneck History and Heritage | Save The Redneck

The Covenanters of 17th century Scotland prescribed to this ideology and are the true founders of the “Redneck” movement. The Covenanters rejected the Church of England as their sanctioned church. In doing so, they also refused to be ruled by bishops which was the conventional method of church government. Many of the self determined Covenanters signed documents with their own blood that rejected episcopacy and demanded a Presbyterian Church government. To show their allegiance in this movement the Covenanters began wearing red pieces of cloth around their necks and were appropriately called “Rednecks.” Out of defiance, the original redneck was born.
    Scotland

Although there is no consensus on the exact origin of the term, it is known that Scottish supporters of the Solemn League of Covenant signed the covenant in their own blood and wore red neckerchiefs as a sign of unity and means of identification.

    Appalachia

Many Ulster-Scot Presbyterians migrated to America or had sympathizing family in the States, particularly in the Southern Appalachian region and the term redneck was applied to these people as well.

    West Virginia

Some etymologists trace the history of the term to the West Virginia coal miners who wore red bandannas around their necks in an attempt to create unity among their comrades in efforts to unionize the mines.

    The South

Southern sharecroppers and migrant workers who often exhibited the effects of the sun on their bare necks were frequently called rednecks, and the term began to be applied to all poor, indigent workers.

    Virginia

The term may also have its beginning in the 17th century in Virginia because fair-skinned, indentured servants became sunburned while tending plantation crops.

Are you saying nuns can't smoke weed? That's like saying nuns can't take prescription pills.

When I think of a Redneck, I think of a guy with a pick-up truck sporting deer antlers on the grill with red and green Christmas lights on them. The fact (if it is one) that it refers mostly to white people does not make it a racial slur...though I would guess that, depending on what area of the country one lives in and its local customs, it could be seen as one. *shrug*

To me, it's similar to hillbilly . . . a derogatory term when used to be derogatory; endearing when meant to be that; but certainly not a racial slur.
