A mysterious illness has Texas health officials worried after half of those infected died from the unidentified disease.

The Montgomery County Health Department said eight patients had presented with flu-like symptoms or pneumonia-like symptoms. Of the eight infected, four have died. Despite their symptoms, none have yet tested positive for the flu, officials said in a statement Tuesday.

There is an update to this story. More people are being hospitalized from this disease, but the infection has not gone outside of a small area in Montgomery County.

This one, I don't believe, is as bad as they are making it out to be.

1) The 8 people, 4 of whom died, were those whose symptoms were so bad that they went to a hospital, but there is a lot of flu going around. I have had it, and my band leader, who lives in Montgomery County, was so sick with it that he played last Friday sitting on a chair all night, and could not sing. lucky for us, there are others in the band who can sing, and took up the slack for him. All in all, while the media may be playing this like it's the apocalypse, a lot of people have come down with the flu, and recovered without seeking treatment.

2) Last night, someone taking the test did show positive for H1N1. The test they were using before was known not to detect all strains of flu. The man tested last night was tested using a different test.

Yes, it's bad, but nothing to get worked up about..... That is, unless it's you who have gotten really sick from it.

Always interesting to watch and see if something develops. Danarhea, is this an area of special interest to you?

No doubt, with all the crying wolf when it's just ground squirrel is going to desensitize all of us to any real alerts.

Not at all. I try to stay as far away from that stuff as possible. LOL.

I remember discussing the possibility of bird-flu epidemic, some years ago when it was a big concern, with a guy that worked with state emergency management. I'd said something like "when the first case shows up in SC, I'll be thinking seriously about not going to work."

He laughed and said "We've already had half a dozen cases in SC."

My eyes probably bugged out. "There was nothing in the news!" I protested.

He gave me the sardonic eye. "Damn right there wasn't. State government made sure of that."

More than a few cases of it now. It is confirmed that this is H1N1 swine flu. There are 14 people in 3 counties in critical condition, and 6 deaths, as of last night.

The good news is that this year's flu shot has H1N1 vaccine in it.

Hmm

You know - metal toxicity, acute, can look like the flu at first. . . that takes testing and time to diagnose depending on the source.
- errant thought. I've had to do a lot of research on that this week.
