Senators in rush to pass budget vow to undo cut to military retirement pay - Washington Times

I could swallow the cuts to the military retirement only if they cut to all government retirement programs first. Starting with the President, House and Senate.

To be honest, as someone who's nearing retirement eligilibity, I coudl live the cuts as well as the various other changes to military benefits as long as there are accross the board reductions. Reductions to grants to study field mice in New Mexico, more stringent standards to welfare, increase retirement age for SS, etc, etc, etc.

I think a better way to have address military retirement would have been to suspend for military retirees who double dip and have a GS (federal service) job after retirement. The Pentagon and various other agencies are filled with members that collect a miltiary retirement pension while they're receiving full federal employee pay. I would have started there before going after it as a whole.

I'm no sponsor of our military, but people that work 25-30 years with the expectation of a certain retirement deserve it. Let them further cut the Pentagons budget for hardware and pay these people.

Re: Senate’s promise to fix cut to military retirement pay Handful of Republicans joi

If they were across the board cuts I'd reluctantly agree with them, but they are not. Very dissapointed they would treat our veterans this way. A very bad show of disrespect IMO.

Yep. A two-year bipartisan "agreement" that will last less than a month before adding more federal spending. Gotta love those congress critters. It's a crisis (but self created) so no "pay as you go rule" is even being discussed. ;)

I don't want to swallow it at all. It would be easier to take if they had cut tax loopholes for illegal aliens and cut welfare/medicaid at a rate of 5% for every 1% they take from retirees.

Spoken like a true defender of all federal spending increases; you can cut (actually not increase) this program but only if you cut (not increase?) all other "similar" programs. This is why we have a "pay as you go" rule/law that is supposed to require an offsetting cut or new revenue for any increase in spending. Naturally it is a "crisis" to not increase retirement spending, so that requires no offsetting cuts or new revenue.

Surely we couldn't cut back on buying those excess airplanes and tanks that the military has no use for.

I think the military is far more sacred and their retirement should be the last thing cut. If they choose to cut the congress' retirement...I wouldn't have said a peep. I am actually against most forms of government sponsored retirement, but I have a soft spot for the military.

And you are right, the "cuts" are not really cuts. They are caps on increases which are touted as cuts.

There were no cuts, just reductions in future COLA increases - the exact same thing will be done for SS (and was done for the SS full benefit retirement age). Your selective outrage is noted and is shared by many and for many different federal spending programs.

The horror! Do you assert that the "pay as you go" rule should be be actually enforced? But this is a "crisis"! ;)

My sacred cow is better than your sacred cow. It wouldn't be politics if we didn't have that.

I believe our government should have honest cuts in spending and live within our means. If you cut anything, you are going to hurt someone else.

How about this novel idea: when federal spending increases then raise federal taxation to cover that.

We have had national debt increases for the last four decades with no end in sight - there was no "crisis" or "emergency" that lasted four decades unless you count political resistance to raising federal taxation exceeding political resistance to raising federal spending. ;)

I would accept a mixture of tax raises and cuts.

What? A few posts ago you were against "cuts" that were merely decreases in proposed spending increases. ;)

That kind of "cut" requires added taxation since it increases spending. You seemed to object to the "cut" not to the lack of budget offsets in the actual spending increase.

If there aren't at least increases equal to inflation won't the effect be a cut?

I wouldn't say that. If a program is serving 100 people today and with equal money it is serving 150 people 5 years from now, would that be a cut?

Ya, I want real cuts. I want programs cut. I want a smaller government. I think we should have a balanced budget or pay as you go. We don't either now.

I miss the connection. Would you restate that please?
