Merkel compared NSA to Stasi in heated encounter with Obama

I'm a libertarian - however, I don't understand why the Germans (or anyone) thought the US wasn't spying on them..

I damn well know the government has a file on me - they probably record ever keystroke I make, to assume they don't would be naive considering they have the resources...

Can you imagine any of the foreign leaders that have expressed their anger over this being able to just say, well yeah, of course the US is listening to all of our phone calls?

Honestly...

I dont see the point of our exchange. We obviously both agree that limits have to be put on the NSA and that an investigation into their doings is required.

So why debate the "concept Stasi"?

We agree to agree?

And there you have it.

German chancellor furious after revelations US intelligence agency listened in on her personal mobile phone

In an angry exchange with Barack Obama, Angela Merkel has compared the snooping practices of the US with those of the Stasi, the ubiquitous and all-powerful secret police of the communist dictatorship in East Germany, where she grew up. The German chancellor also told the US president that America's National Security Agency cannot be trusted because of the volume of material it had allowed to leak to the whistleblower Edward Snowden, according to the New York Times.

Livid after learning from Der Spiegel magazine that the Americans were listening in to her personal mobile phone, Merkel confronted Obama with the accusation: "This is like the Stasi."

Good for her - America could use a woman of principle and integrity like Angela Merkel - actually, we all could.

The sad fact is that the trend will continue after Obama because the bureaucracy will not change and the policies will remain intact. The Left feels that's not to bad if it's the Right who is being attacked but that could change with a far right president and they will be the victims.

Now that the middle class is being effected they will want their old America back but it is likely too late.

I agree on your first point completely. They started before and will continue after, unless there really comes enough pressure. And it is growing. As to your second point, I would only hope you are incorrect.

Merkel sure is good at blowing a lot of hot air. If she wanted to put her money where her mouth was she would offer Snowden asylum.

Unlike President Obama, Merkel doesn't believe she's a Queen with the ability to ignore the laws of her country or only to enforce those she agrees with.

If I'm the president I'm ignoring the phone....

I suppose I understand misguided people - I do post on DP lol.

As I recall her public comments didn't include that kind of talk. How is it we know that she said this anyway? Was someone in the presidents office and heard this and reported it, or was someone in Merkel's office and heard her say it and reported it. Or was it the NSA that revealed this? :)

With the NSA and HLS and all the various organizations tracking us, watching us, waiting to pounce, the fact that we throw more people in jail per capita than anyone else in the entire world....we ain't far from Stasi. Fairly accurate comparison.

I don't think Obama is interested in hearing anyone but himself talk, maybe Nancy Pelosi or his robots on MSNBC or CNN...

I think a lot of world leaders share the same politics but Obama treats them like nothing, because Obama is an arrogant clown.

I've met the guy over a dozen times, and he seriously tries to be liked but is the biggest prick in the world.

The weird part is that a lot of people disagree, I see it tho...

Maybe it's not assholism, it's more like elitist snuggism - IDK -he certainly has a complex...

I suppose he overdoes it with the "likeable guy" act...

NSA operates with impunity, the administration has a level of arrogance that rivals the totalitarian powers of the 20th century, and there are people in the US that still defend it. Godbama says it's for your own good.

Get out them jackboots guys, papers please.

You have met Obama personally over a dozen times??

No, instead the Republocrats will continue to use 1984 as a playbook instead of a warning.

I'm no one to defend Obama by any means but the NSA has been operating such for sometime, apparently worse than ever now to be sure. Did you ever hear what senator Church had to say about the NSA in 1976?

No, instead the Republocrats will continue to use 1984 as a playbook instead of a warning.

You see both parties using this. Nice not everyone is a partisan.

i think it's very clear we're under single party rule. Partisanship is just maintained as propaganda to make people think there's a difference.

Jackboots not needed in this day and age, all that will be needed is to threaten to withhold the freebies.

Is there a forum without tinfoil hats?

Yes, it's a wonderful forum where your responses are meaningful as well.

Some progressive in about 3 or 4 posts is going to tell me to go put my tin foil hat on because I distrust the government..

It's a great way to make a post without actually contributing anything substantial or intellectual. Que sera sera.

Yes they did.

Does the NSA also have secret prisons with torture chambers?
Does the NSA blackmail family members and friends into spying on those close to them?

LOL, how would you, or I, or anyone else, know? One of the most salient points about secret prisons, secret torture chambers, etc. is that they are secret.

I would not be so sure of the probity of so called western democracies. Have you ever heard of Senator McCarthy, or of extraordinary rendition, or imprisonment without trial?

It is amazing quite what may be 'justified' in the interests of national security.
