Fox News Remains Ratings Champ As 2013 Comes to Close

Fox News Channel maintained its grip on the cable-news network ratings prize in 2013, drawing more viewers than the combined averages of CNN, MSNBC and HLN.It was a down year in terms of overall audience, as every newsie but HLN showed declines from their Presidential Election-driven tallies of 2012.

According to Nielsen data through Dec. 8, Fox News Channel averaged 1.774 million viewers in primetime (down 13% from 2012) and 297,000 adults 25-54 (down 30%). It was followed by MSNBC with 645,000 viewers and 203,000 adults 25-54 (down 29% in both); CNN with 578,000 (down 15%) and 187,000 adults 25-54 (down 16%); and HLN with 403,000 total viewer (up 21%) and 142,000 in the demo (up 27%).

Interesting how the trend continues. I find Fox to be the best of the named channels.

I think the credibility of MSNBC and CNN isnt great this year either.

I don't watch the news channels during prime time, I do during the day when the news is on. I switch back and forth between Fox and CNN depending when the commercials are on. If both have a commercial at the same time then it is ESPN for a few minutes and then back to the news.

I find it interesting that with all their ratings, they are unable to get a Republican in the White House.

I wish this would mean that we don't have to hear so much whining about "main stream media" bias, but somehow I doubt it.

Any comments on the differences you note during the day (before the commentators as you note)?

Well, until Fox averages 6 to 9 million viewers like each of the news programs from ABC, NBC and CBS do each night, liberal media bias is still a big problem in our country.

I dont know that the function of a cable news network is to get anyone in the whitehouse.

Do you see that as a legitimate function of our supposedly adversarial media?

Fox news doesn't have anywhere near the ratings of broadcast channel. We are talking about cable news, a very specific portion of tv.

Exactly, if you listen to the lefts shrieking, you would swear one center right cable news service and a few AM talk shows are some unstoppable evil giant. The left always tells you who they are afraid uf

Ke$ha's single "Tik Tok" has sold more copies than any Beatles single ever did.

Therefore, she is the superior artist.

That lack the magic ability to promise sending their viewers other people's money. ;)

Not much on the stories or news reported. I think the biggest difference is FOX always seems to have more guests when discussing opinions of what happened and they are 2-1 Republican. CNN doesn't have as guest giving opinions and their guests are more 50-50. But outside of that, the news is pretty much the same.

Nobody is appealing to popularity. Its just an interesting and consistent trend. Its also interesting that until 2000 or so there was no center-right leaning news network, and yet a few years later here we are.

Why do you think that is?

Gosh, it amazes me that a free station would have more viewers than a fee for service station. It must be the same reason that more people ride the subway/city bus than use limousine services. The prefer the quality of service. ;)

Actually you should be a bit concerned, IMO.

But first,

Congratulations FOXNews! Their advertising value should render a tidy sum with this good news.

This does not surprise me in the least. They really have no competition when it comes to rightwing flavored news.

The deeper message is this. There are only so many viewers watching TV. According to the poll, that number is 3,375,000.

Of that 3.375 million people, 1.774 prefer their news entertainment presented with a rightwing twist, slant, bias, spin, presentation or call it what you will. FOXNews is the only network willing to give them what they want. They have no competition.

The other networks, on the other hand, have to divide 1.621 million viewers up between themselves.

Here is the REAL indicator that I think people should pay attention to. 1.774 million viewers prefer conservative leanings and only 1.621 million people do not. The math tells me that over half of the nation's viewers, 1.774m vs., 1.621m, prefer conservative news over moderate or liberal. That is an indicator of where American is leaning these days. Chalk one up for the conservative ideology!

Plus, FOXNews has hotter chicks. Rachel Maddow is like fingernails on a chalkboard and Piers Morgan make me wanna puke. Boringggggggg.....

It all makes perfect sense to me.

Each of those programs get about 20 minutes of news if they are lucky, the remainder of the time is for commercials.

Tell that to Fox News, then, since they tried desperately to do just that.

Miley Cyrus gets huge ratings too...has nothing to do with quality.

Are you disagreeing with my point, or just being a smart-ass?

No, I really don't, but that doesn't stop Fox from trying. I hope they do keep trying because they haven't succeeded yet. Strange as it may seem, I think because they get so deeply involved in the politics they'll lose every time.

Are you disagreeing with my point, or just being a smart-ass?

What exactly was your point? Were you trying to assert that liberal bias in the MSM cannot be overtaken by a single cable news channel, or that FNC was exhibiting conservative bias?

Tell that to Fox News, then, since they tried desperately to do just that.

With a national audience of under two million that would be quite a feat, indeed.
