China lands Jade Rabbit robot rover on Moon

Actually, that's only ironic if you get your definition of the word from an Alanis Morissette song. :)
That's debatable. With the possible exception of a "free ride after you've already paid", she misuses the word completely, referring to things which are tragic, unfortunate or just plain bad luck.

The title of this thread tho...definitely Ironic, in a satirical sense.

They have loaned the USA a lot of money, lots of which they earned by selling the USA various items now cheaply produced in China which used to be produced in the USA by people who are now unemployed.

Don't get in the way of rah rah America Shrub!! :)

Maybe the can use it to take picture of the Apollo Landing sites to shut up the Moon Conspiracy nuts.

They've already said that's one of the purposes of their landing, to prove the 69' landing was a farce.

The saddest part is that so many people are stupid enough to think Chinese people don't pronounce L's.

Look at how many are in this thread.

It made me think of the movie Christmas Story when the family was at the Chinese restaurant and the wait staff sang "Deck the harrs with bows of horry, Fa ra ra ra ... "

god, i love that movie

If they land people there and drive around in a moon buggy, they'll only be a little over 40 years behind the US.

Near-earth travel is old. Next meaningful milestones in the space race are

1) First MANNED foreign planet landing (i. e. Mars) w/long-term mission and successful return to Earth (exp. in 30 years)

2) Hyperspace/FTL (subspace) communication (i. e. radio waves bundled in warp fields) (exp. in 65 years)

3) Warp driven/FTL spacecraft (exp. in 180 yrs.)

But China has just established an air defence identification zone over the moon.

I wonder if Obama will fly two space shuttles over the moon ?

I can expect FTL communication in 65 years? This is fantastic!

The insulting thread title combined with the opinions of others just goes to show that Americans are brainwashed to hate China.

Everyone in China is celebrating right now. This is a huge accomplishment for them. They went from a backward rural wasteland in the 70's to a thriving world economic leader, with 10% per year growth. Even when China does something right, ignorant Americans will find a reason to badmouth them about it.

or communication with parallel universes.
or something we can't even imagine right now, something as incomprehensible as the internet or satellite navigation would have been fifty years ago.

It is an accomplishment for sure. And it defends the notion that China is to be taken seriously. We can set down and talk with them or ignore what they want and act belligerent. Intentionally fly bombers into airspace they have claimed, sail a war ship/ships provocatively close to their carrier and any other number of sophomoric acts of chest thumping, right in their yard, too. This soft landing is the accomplishment of three nations, no small thing.

Laugh all you like. Not just any asshole can
land something on the moon, forty years behind or not.

Pffft...we did it 6 times, and delivered 3 buggies up there and we did it with computers that had the processing power and memory of a desk calculator.

And no, it wasn't because we absconded with German rocket Scientist after WW2

Most of the seemingly overwhelming problems of doing that in the 60s were overcome by American scientist.

Go ahead China, I guess in 40 years you'll land a buggy on mars.

Well, the entirety of indo-China's is apparently not capable of pronouncing the " Z" sound.

" Oh my God, rook, it's Godrilla "....

If I were China, I'd have a press release, and announce that the conspiracy folks were right all along, as there was no evidence of a moon landing, or a flag, were found.

Americans collective minds.....blown.

Sure, but you know what China has a ton of that we don't have so much of anymore? Momentum. We can't even create a decent train system because it's immediately sucked into the culture war. China wants a train? Bam. Done. The more we rest on our laurels and celebrate our past accomplishments, the sooner the rest of the world is going to just pass us by. You could almost say that it will leave us in the dustbin of history.

They've got the air quality to prove it. ;)

Hey, I didn't say I agree with the method of their modernization, but modernizing they are.

They're already hitting the ceiling of their capacity. Slowing growth, pollution and population problems. If they don't start to turn some of it around the way the US did in the 70's with an EPA they'll suffer for it.

Oh, on that front they're suffering plenty already.

Almost all rapidly growing civilizations crashed at one point or another due to environmental overload.

I don't think environmental impact occurred much before the industrial revolution though I did read where the Egyptians literally ruined much of their own environment with the sheer amount of wood burned for kilning the bricks/blocks to build the Pyramids. Don't know if that's true or not.
