    Wal-Mart Bans Customer for LIFE!

I typically don't ever post in this section of the forum, but this story caught my eye this morning and caused much laughter and guilt. The laughter should be obvious after a quick read, but the guilt comes from knowing that I live in a country where something like this actually takes place. The old saying: "Read it and Weep," truly applies to this funny, yet so sad story. Enjoy this story, but have a handkerchief nearby as you realize what a _ _ _ _ _ _ up country we have created for ourselves. (fill in the blanks yourselves)

Source: Wal-Mart bans man for life for matching ads- MSN Money

    Copy:

Joe Cantrell made a hobby out of browsing local stores and going to Wal-Mart to get the cheapest prices for its products through ad matching, according to television station WXYZ. However, last week, Cantrell took a trip to Wal-Mart's San Tan Valley, Ariz., location, where an employee stopped him and told him he wasn’t allowed to ad match. Cantrell got upset and complained to management. Upon his return trip four days later, he was placed in handcuffs by local law enforcement.

"When I left, he turned around and called the Pinal County Sheriff's Office and said he felt intimidated and threatened," Cantrell told WXYZ. "I was upset, but never once did I say anything to the gentleman."

The former wrestler says he was "handcuffed, humiliated and embarrassed in front of everybody at Wal-Mart," but the deputies quickly released him.

The customer was released by the cops, who realized Cantrell was not a threat. Nevertheless, he says he's facing charges of threatening, intimidation and disorderly conduct.

On top of all that, he will no longer be able to pursue his hobby -- Cantrell has been slapped with a lifetime ban from Wal-Mart.

The ban is baffling when you consider what the retailer says about ad matching on its official website: "We're committed to providing low prices every day. On everything. So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell us and we’ll match it. Right at the register."

Wal-Mart sent ABC15 the following statement Tuesday:

"We make every effort to make sure our customers have a good experience in our stores. As in previous situations, we attempted to work with this customer. However, in this situation, the associate felt unsafe and so we contacted local law enforcement. We are continuing to cooperate with law enforcement on their investigation."

If Walmart makes savings to its customers available through such advertising and PR campaigns and then calls the police merely because customers get good at playing their marketing game, then that's Walmart's problem not the customers who play the game well. Poor ole Cantrell, can no longer do what he likes to do: Beat the stores at their own game.

Here's what I propose since this is after all a politically driven forum: Americans should place a LIFETIME ban on Walmart and its immoral business practices. That way, Walmart can no longer practices its hobby of selling crappy products to American Customers! And, did you notice the embedded link from MSN to Investor Place, showing Walmart being sued for selling crappy gas cans?

The hit parade of insanity, greed, slave labor and customer-hate never seems to end with Walmart.

According to the Wal-Mart statement, the guy threatened the Wal-Mart staffer. He was not banned for add matching, but for the threat. Funny how there is almost always more to the story...

Yeah, I don't see a problem, even assuming the guy didn't actually threaten anyone. Walmart is not allowed to discriminate, but they are entitled to kick a customer out if they're being disruptive.

Since there is always more to the story, then it would certainly be incumbent to enquire as to the nature of this "threat" rather than just accepting Walmart's word on the matter that there was one.

and, of course, anybody interested in fairness would ask why Walmart was reneging on their stated policy that elicited the reaction in the first place.

I started my post with the phrase "According to Wal-Mart". That does not imply that it is true nor that there are not more questions.

Well the issue doesn't seem to be about *the ad matching* - it seems to be about *the employee feeling threatened*

Does it matter, no - but the suggestion otherwise is misleading.

"However, last week, Cantrell took a trip to Wal-Mart's San Tan Valley, Ariz., location, where an employee stopped him and told him he wasn’t allowed to ad match"

If after looking at their website about ad matching I might get very upset and maybe even threaten the employee to get out of my face if he said it wasn't allowed to ad match.

Who knows if it happened, but what fault does corporate have in this? It sounds like this was an ignorant employee that caused the problem and the store went overboard.

On the other hand with the climate as it is in the US, I am not sure banning the customer was not a good idea.

Where is the video tape of the interaction?

Re: Wal-Mart Bans Customer for LIFE!

I don't really grasp what the ad-matching is, honestly.

Does that mean he took items to the front of the store and showed that he found them cheaper elsewhere? Then the clerk told him 'we don't ad-match' and then the guy talked to a manager?

Joe Cantrell made a hobby out of browsing local stores and going to Wal-Mart to get the cheapest prices for its products through ad matching, according to television station WXYZ.
    - I don't get how window-shopping at other stores, finding the cheapest price, and then trekking to Walmart to buy it *for that same price* is even "saving money." Why doesn't he just buy it at those original locations?

(Note - this question and confusion doesn't alter that the original situation isn't *about the ad-matching* - it's about *the employee feeling threatened*)
