Obama shakes hands with Cuba's Castro in 'gesture of hope'

Some of us see the US losing the moral high ground to a Russian thug and Arab dictator as something.

Some of us see the lost respect of the worlds thugs and dictators as something.

But not the left.

As I recall, there are those on the right opposed to throwing around our influence around the world anymore due to high government spending. Also, who is "the left"?

Heya Monte.....LTNS. :2wave: Its not like others haven't done the same thing. Ever hear Rubio talk about Cuba?

Hi MMC! Yeah been running around like chicken little, lol. True, I've heard Rubio on Cuba.

This is just much to do about nothing.

What's amusing is the U.S. won't deal with Cuba, but has no problem dealing with Saudis, China, and other dictators. COMPLETELY hypocritical.

On one hand you complain that people defend totalitarian regimes, yet have no comment on the U.S. doing business with other totalitarian regimes. Seems hypocritical to me.

And there's a long history of this hypocrisy. Partisans protecting their president.

OK, so I just couldn't help but put these these 2 things together:

Said as if class struggle isnt a central tenet of the left.

Of the actual left, yeah. Not of American liberals, progressives, or whatever. They're just fine with class.

I expect him to be a strong leader, acting in the US's best interest-why is that too much to ask?

Instead, the worlds B-team lives la vida loca, knowing Obama isn't going to do a damn thing.

And what is the US's best interest, more war?

Glad to see ya back......haven't had much going in FP since ya left. Lately just here and there shots.....but I am still staying in check with most of it. ;)

Obama would have to bend slightly to look Castro in the eye given their relative heights.

But doesn't Obama enjoy looking down his nose at people?

Why try to be on the same level as Castro?

Iran first then Cuba?

I respect your perspective brother, but I vehemently disagree. Castro lasted through 11 US presidents and an embargo. Our policy towards Cuba has failed. In spite of the US embargo, Cuba still managed to improve the lives of Cubans exponentially from the days of Batista and mafia 'donkey shows.'

Our policy towards Cuba has failed because our policy was flawed from the beginning. Our policy should always have been and should always be one of Isolationism.

Cuba offers free health care and education to its citizens cradle to grave, and has the highest percentage of doctors in the world.

My question would be how those doctors stack up to the average doctor here in the United States. I don't know, nor do I intend to find out. I am not a believer in social welfare, government led healthcare or education, so we're probably not going to find much common ground on the issue of what a wonderful place Cuba is.

My avatar is that of my daughter .. and US aggression around the world is no friend of the American soldier, who continues to suffer from astronomical rates of suicide, depression, PTSD, and other forms of combat fatigue.

Please thank her for her service on my behalf. I will definitely agree that US aggression around the world is no friend of the American soldier, nor is our desire to be the world's law enforcement officers, social workers, disaster recovery teams, etc.... My family's history of military service to this country goes all the way back to the Frech & Indian War and we haven't missed too many conflicts since. What we do to our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coastguardsmen is disgusting. We treat them like disposable diapers, and it's quite a black eye for this country so far as I'm concerned. Personally, I'd bring them all home tomorrow if I had the power to do it. We've got plenty of things they could be doing here to help this country (border security being the biggest one).

Obama should have had a Marine swoop in with a step ladder for Castro. That would would have been the appropriate thing to do.

Or at least pick up Castro under the arms for the handshake.

And when did the US have the moral high ground? Sounds like 'rah rah America' cheer leading.

It's not like our foreign policy toward those countries has had the intended effect. Ayatollahs and Castro are still in power. Meanwhile we maintained relations with the USSR and the whole thing fell apart. We've maintained relations with China and that has paid dividends.

It just seems that not talking to someone doesn't change their way of doing things.

Funny that at Mandela's funeral, Obama criticized other leaders that don't tolerate dissent, with a straight face, too!

Not particularly, not really a fan of cigars. And as I explained, it's not a matter of nice. SA has oil we trade for. And the African nations we do business with all have pretty significant resources we trade for. Cuba has nothing we need and we have plenty of our own resorts.

Haiti, Mali, Nicaragua and others that offer less than Cuba but with whose crazy governments we accept. Not everything is about money and trade.

Just because you don't like cigars is not enough reason to deprive your fellow cigar-chomping Americans. Plus, the Cuban resorts are affordable, even for that low income family who wants a break.

I've felt this way for decades. But "your way" is the path we have chosen.

So it goes.

Ok, what should we have done with regards to Syria, attack yet another country that hasn't harmed us?

We could have started by NOT flexing, and then immediately flinching like Obama did. All Obama did was diminish our credibility, guarantee a continued Assad regime, and increase Russian influence in the region (especially to Iran, Syria, and Lebanon).

Was it about regime change or controlling the evil?
