Obama shakes hands with Cuba's Castro in 'gesture of hope'

The right hates everything .. where's the news?

Hopefully, Obama will get something right and open the door to Cuba.

It really would be a good idea to open the door to Cuba. They do not seem to be a real threat anymore. And a lot of Americans would love to visit the place, see their folks and all that.

What you call a small gesture has become a pattern over the course of his presidency. Granted, one or two times, that could be dismissed. But it's part of a pattern that shows weakness. You know, in Russia, folks on the street still call Obama Putin's bitch.

Weakness? LOL...it shows that he is polite towards other heads of state. Only a fool would view this as a sign of weakness.

Can we leave out the perceived bowing and get on with being a positive influence? If we normalized (somewhat) relations with Cuba, it would bring prosperity to the masses of the population. Communism fails once people have a shot at Capitalism and we would "win" by doing this. China, Russia and Vietnam are good examples. W made things better - not perfect - by opening up to normalized relations and helped create their middle-class. That has reduced their aggression considerably. People who have full bellies are less war-like.

My POV anyway.

Who cares if Cuba's masses live in prosperity? They are no longer a threat to us, and there is no reason for us to normalize relations with them. It's just going to mean more foreign aid, more mouths for us to feed. Let them take care of their own people, or not.

That's not infatuation

*THIS* is infatuation!

Nah, that's Not Infatuation.....NOW THIS is in infatuation. ;)

Myself, I would be checking for my wallet.

Bowing and his weak in the knees body posturing when meeting with foreign dignitaries isn't simple politeness and only the blind or worshippers don't see that.

yeah, what's Obama thinking? he should have roundhouse kicked him in the jaw before ordering a naval blockade to keep out the soviets.

Well.....I am sure someone around there had a volkswagon. So he could have just gave him a slugbug.

First of all what is this "gesture of hope" BS? I didn't know whether to put this in media bias or here. I have no problem with him giving the guy a formal handshake in a situation like this but he seems like he is really infatuated with the guy and it looks to me like he is bowing again. Why is he so warm and subservient to this commie thug.

Yahoo!

Wasn't there a very similar photo of Brezhnev and Tricky Dick?

You stand firm, straight and tall and show the Cuban people we are not wimps to be pushed around by their little punk ass dictator.

Who was Mr. Castro trying to push around?

You could say the same of most ME and African countries. But we manage to get along with them. So, why not Cuba?

My opinion has nothing to do with politics or political parties or Obama etc. I just don't see what the point is in being alienated.

I would truly hope not, BAC.

The photo you're using as your avatar appears to show a woman in military dress. US Army, if I don't miss my guess. I would like to believe the average US Soldier is intelligent enough and has sufficient situational awareness to understand how poor a choice opening up relations with any foreign government is, nevermind one that is communist in nature.

I respect your perspective brother, but I vehemently disagree. Castro lasted through 11 US presidents and an embargo. Our policy towards Cuba has failed. In spite of the US embargo, Cuba still managed to improve the lives of Cubans exponentially from the days of Batista and mafia 'donkey shows.'

Cuba offers free health care and education to its citizens cradle to grave, and has the highest percentage of doctors in the world.

My avatar is that of my daughter .. and US aggression around the world is no friend of the American soldier, who continues to suffer from astronomical rates of suicide, depression, PTSD, and other forms of combat fatigue.

I disagree. We don't need to lend a hand to Cuba. If they want to be included on our trade, let them come asking for it and we'll bargain just as we do with every other nation.

As has been pointed out by others too, I said Cubans. The Cuban people don't deserve endless suffering over decades old real or perceived trouble with Cuban leadership. We have far better relations with much worse dictators around the world, some of our own creation.

Cmon Now DH.....what do you mean. There were 90 World leaders there all in one Spot. I explained this out earlier to WCH. Kinda went something like this. ;)

Well WCH......now how did we manage to miss this Opportunity. Here we have 90 World leaders with most of them representing and standing for Democracy all in one place. I expected that #1 would fail in his required duties......I will expect you to find him. You Know, what to do.

SPECTRE Shall Not be taken for granted anymore. Send out the Cobra Commandos. In the meantime #2 has his report on the NATO Project.

I completely agree. And, it would be the best way to influence their leadership and people.

He is a dictator and as such needs to appear powerful and relevant on the world stage. Obama played right into that for him. It's a great photo op and will be front page for days in castros news papers.

US presidents have held hands with and hugged dictators before. Overthrown democratically elected governments and replaced them with dictators, and Cuba isn't even a threat to us. What's the big deal here?

There is a very solid reason why we haven't normalized relations with Cuba all these years. No, it has nothing to do with Communism or Cuba being any sort of a threat to the US. It has to do with the numbers of Cuban Americans living in Florida who have achieved citizenship and therefore vote in our elections. They despise Castro with a white hot rage, and would vote against any candidate who even suggested that normalizing relations with Castro would be even a remote possibility. That candidate would lose Florida, which tends to be a swing state.

Therefore, we don't normalize relations with Cuba.

Obama doesn't have to worry about that anymore

Cuba is a natural trading partner with the US. Havana buildings are in such disrepair;they are literally falling down.
There is money to be made. Cuba is slant drilling oil under a Chinese contract across the Straight of Florida.

Just a few things here, and it serves NO pupose not to trade, and normalize relations. None.

The Cuban Embargo is a relic of the cold war, end it.

That is absolutely correct.

Id prefer the Cubans end its totalitarian communist regime. People shouldnt have to live like that.

Not precisely the same. The ME and African countries we trade with have something we need for trade, Cuba, not so much. We'd just be taking on more foreign welfare.

Heya Monte.....LTNS. :2wave: Its not like others haven't done the same thing. Ever hear Rubio talk about Cuba?

Baloney, unless Obama was born with little T Rex arms he didn't need to bow to shake hands with the man.

granted that he could have used his bionic extender handshake. always the chance of hitting the wrong button and launching the rocket fist, though. still safer to lean in slightly, IMHO.

Couldn't have said that any better than this.

Yeah, this is as big a non-event has I've ever seen. Right on par with 'Surprise! Obama behaves properly at solemn event'.

Anything to detract from the continued bad news of ObamaCare.

ts not your call, it's not the US call. Castro has out lived many presidents, and we tried the Bay of Pigs.
Everything the US had done -even the "wet foot" policy of immigration is peculiar, and un-needed with Cuba.
They are a sovereign country, we have no right to tell them how to run their govt.

Besides all this it's counterproductive.
