First of all what is this "gesture of hope" BS? I didn't know whether to put this in media bias or here. I have no problem with him giving the guy a formal handshake in a situation like this but he seems like he is really infatuated with the guy and it looks to me like he is bowing again. Why is he so warm and subservient to this commie thug.

Commie thug??? Is Obama a commie thug? Hopefully he invited him to the Whitehouse.

The right hates everything .. where's the news?

Hopefully, Obama will get something right and open the door to Cuba.

Next time, let's elect a short president.
That way, foreign leaders will be the ones who appear to be bowing.

I don't bend over when I shake someones hand that is shorter than me and I doubt anyone else does either. Nice excuse though for the bow. The body language here is quite telling. Obama is bowing and leaning forward and has a huge grin while Castro seems a bit taken aback by all the gushing and fawning.

I would truly hope not, BAC.

The photo you're using as your avatar appears to show a woman in military dress. US Army, if I don't miss my guess. I would like to believe the average US Soldier is intelligent enough and has sufficient situational awareness to understand how poor a choice opening up relations with any foreign government is, nevermind one that is communist in nature.

yeah, what's Obama thinking? he should have roundhouse kicked him in the jaw before ordering a naval blockade to keep out the soviets.

Shaking hands with a foreign leader is proper conduct regardless.

His bowing to the keeper of the most Holy Islamic shrine, the King of Saudi Arabia, was another thing. But, then, Obama did say he is of the Muslim faith, though the reporter convinced him to change that to saying Christian faith.

No problem with him shaking hands with Castro.

He's stooping down because he is taller than Castro...did you make this much of a fuss when Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam Hussein?

His MEETING with a foreign leader is inappropriate conduct so far as I'm concerned. Especially the leader of a Socialist or Communist nation.

He should have given him a very brief and formal hand shake while looking him straight in the eye and quickly moved on without saying anything. That would be proper protocol. No need to bow and scrape or "step and fetch" even.

EDIT: It almost looks like he's saying "yes massa".

Raul Castro is 5' 4". Obama is 6' 1". even a very brief and formal handshake would require Obama to :

a. bend slightly

b. grow a longer arm.

as growing a longer arm can take months or even years, i feel that Obama made the right decision.

Actually, it seems pretty big of Castro to shake hands with Obama. Perhaps news of Obama's irrelevance has yet to reach Cuba.

Obama would have to bend slightly to look Castro in the eye given their relative heights.

As opposed to the major player on the world scene that Cuba is...

Obama should have had a Marine swoop in with a step ladder for Castro. That would would have been the appropriate thing to do.

ah cut him some slack, he wants to one up Bill Clinton

he wants to use a REAL CUBAN Cigar on his intern!

that's silly Nixon met with the Chinese Premier and it led to the end of the iron curtain

Our decision to make the Cuban people suffer because we are mad at their King is foolish and unfair. We have normalized relations with far worse countries and it has been a benefit all around.

Maybe this will be the beginning of getting along with one of our closest neighbors. It's way overdue.

That's my opinion© as an American, it has nothing to do with any political party.

I see Obama's bow is still in good form as well.

But it's worked so well in getting rid of Castro....
