Re: Obama shakes hands with Cuba's Castro in 'gesture of hope'

In his column on July 13 with the Russia-based website, Strategic Culture Foundation, Wayne Madsen pointed out that "Barack Obama has made it one of the linchpins of his administration to identify, prosecute, and imprison national security whistle-blowers. Obama has charged more government employees under the provisions of the antiquated 1917 Espionage Act than all of his predecessors combined. Edward Snowden was the seventh person charged with violating the Espionage Act after he released to the Guardian and the Washington Post classified documents from the NSA revealing the extent of U.S. communication surveillance of the Internet, phone calls, text messages, and Skype communications within the United States and around the world."

The conviction of Bradley Manning under the 1917 Espionage Act, and the US Justice Department's decision to file espionage charges against NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden under the same act, are yet further examples of the Obama administration's policy of using an iron fist against human rights and civil liberties activists.

It is unfortunate that our embargo has hurt the production of Cuban cigars, but I look forward to the influx of Cuban cigars in the future. Cuban cigars wrapped in Connecticut Leaf Tobacco.

It's quibbling over semantics, innit. Yeah, dissention is a political crime and it's indefensible to jail people for it. Pot smoking is, at most, a sin, and it's indefensible to jail people for it.
One difference is, everyone wants Cuban society to liberalize.

If I say Obama is a piece of communist crap and should be tarred and feathered nothing happens. Say that about Castro on the streets of Havana and then see what happens to your vacation.

As stated by others earlier, give it time. While bragging that things aren't as bad here as some other places, were loosing ground. Which is what so many threads here tend to be about.

You haven't been paying attention. I heard people say Castro needs to step aside, one guy said the country'll be better when he's dead. Loudly, publically. You have to try harder than that to get arrested.

Nice country you support with your vacations.

"The 40 year-old political activist, was arrested on 30 July in the central province of Santa Clara as he peacefully participated in a public event to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Cuban national hero Frank País.

“Iván Fernández Depestre is being held only because he holds opinions contrary to those of the Cuban authorities. He must be released immediately and unconditionally,” said Javier Zúñiga, Special Advisor for Amnesty International.

Mr Depestre was charged with “dangerousness”, a pre-emptive measure defined as the “special proclivity of a person to commit crimes” after he was accused of “meeting with antisocial persons”. He hand no access to a lawyer during his trial and was sentenced to three years in jail on 2 August. He is currently on hunger strike."

Why is he so warm and subservient to this commie thug.

Bush kissed the Saudi King on the lips to show his respect for the guy who financed Al-Qaeda, so, please, just shut up with your partisan nonsense. Leaders play the diplomacy game, we know.

    Who cares what Bush did?

This is about Castro. Do you have an opinion on what Obama did here?
