Wouldn't surprise me actually - China takes the Dalai Llama's appearances very seriously and they have a lot of sway and investment all over Africa.

First of all there is no 'national embarrassment' attached to the first two on the part of the Dalai Lama, on South Africa's part perhaps but not on the Dalai Dude.

What has changed- did you not read the paper? Nelson Mandela has died. This is a State Funeral. Kind of a big deal. Rather than be a pawn he will show himself greater than the fussy secular leaders. You can make the same argument of any leader who rises above the petty political crap and does the noble thing.

Just being a pawn... yadda yadda yadda.

Fact is we will never know because Dalai Dude didn't even try.....
The fact that you refer to the man as the "Dalai Dude" makes anything else you have to say irrelevant. Since you have such little respect for the man and presumably respect Mandela, why would you want him to attend if not as a prop to enhance the funeral of the guy you like?

I'd take the Dalai Llama's appearances seriously too. You'd notice him...

Actually I am amazed any Westerner thinks the Dalai Dude is relevant. Long an object of ridicule as Leader of the Hippies and Peaceniks I figure the only reason anyone givesacrap is due the the Rise of China and now the troubles traveling.

The West doesn't DO anything to support the Dalai Dude, I guess because we have as much to 'fear' about China as South Africa, so the lip service is rather hollow.

The Dalai Dude isn't Swaggering BushII, he should extend the olive branch or turn the other cheek as a good religious leader rather than pout about past slights.

Oh well, what could have been, still no worries, plenty of real world leaders to sing the praises of Mandela....

The Tibetan spiritual leader later made plans to travel to South Africa in October 2011 for the 80th birthday party of another Nobel laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But the South African High Commission office in New Delhi stalled on processing the visa until the Dalai Lama eventually withdrew his application.

A South African court acknowledged last year that pressure from China, a major trading partner with South Africa, played a part in the delays
freking Chinese, and the South African gov't - screw them both.
His holiness has to be concerened with the world's population of Tibetian Buddhists.

Makes no difference to me, as a Tibetian Buddhist if he goes or not -i'd rather him stay away if no wanted, under polical pressure,
and use his energy in more constructive ways.
Like preparing for death.sucession,or traveling to teach, not stand around.

"The Dalai Lama has been based in India since he fled China in 1959 following a failed anti-Beijing uprising in his homeland.

China seeks to curb his overseas travels, and warns foreign governments that any visit by the spiritual leader would harm relations."

This happened during is visit to the White house...it offended the Chinese.

So, China's acting a bit like the US in relation to Glenn Greenwald, Edward Snowden and David Miranda? Perhaps, except there's no evidence that the Dalai Lama ever intended to attend Mandela's funeral. Is there any evidence that he and Mandela were close?
