So let the rabid speculation begin!!

Turns out SA does a lot of business with COMMUNIST China. Is China's influence in Africa a result of ties with certain leaders?
I see you've wasted no time.

Was he denied a visa for the funeral? A spokesperson said the Dalai Dude had no plans to attend, not he was denied a visa to attend the funeral.

But not being played by him, since he has been denied a visa to enter the country! Politics? Meh!

In February 2010, after a visit with Obama which displeased the Chinese government, the Dali Lama had to exit the WH by the back door which led to an alley, remember? Quite an upsetting story at the time!

    Greetings, WCH.

Twice, the Dalai Lama was denied a visa to enter the country in 2009 and again in 2011. What has changed in the interim to make you believe he should submit a third time to the national embarrassment? Besides, why would the Dalai Lama allow himself to be used as a pawn by the current South African government in an attempt to make themselves look more open and welcoming or all?

I think the point is, who cares if he goes or not?

"The Dalai Lama — based in the Indian hill town of Dharamsala since he fled China in 1959 — was welcomed to South Africa in 1996 and met with Mandela when he was South Africa's first black and democratically elected president."
Dalai Lama to Miss Mandela Memorial in SAfrica - ABC News

If he doesn't show up, it's because of politics, not because he didn't like Mandela.

The right is just to drum up BS nontroversy .. as is its manner.

A black leader the right doesn't like ..where's the news.

Changing the argument a mite now... So you admit he wasn't denied a visa to attend the state funeral, he didn't even ask for one.

First of all there is no 'national embarrassment' attached to the first two on the part of the Dalai Lama, on South Africa's part perhaps but not on the Dalai Dude.

What has changed- did you not read the paper? Nelson Mandela has died. This is a State Funeral. Kind of a big deal. Rather than be a pawn he will show himself greater than the fussy secular leaders. You can make the same argument of any leader who rises above the petty political crap and does the noble thing.

Just being a pawn... yadda yadda yadda.

Fact is we will never know because Dalai Dude didn't even try.....

I read earlier that China insisted SA not invite him I'll have to find the link.

Yes, you will. I doubt very much that happened.
