Obama: Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff In Honor Of Nelson Mandela [W:382]

Of course he did.

No, he had no involvement in America, made no contribution to America. Again, we don't just lower our flag because someone was popular or did good things on the world stage. If that were the case we would have lowered our flag to half staff when Irena Sendler died in 2008.

I never realized until the last couple of days how much the right absolutely hated Nelson Mandela.

Maybe if you personally have known someone who was killed during the Korean war or someones name who's on the Vietnam War Memorial you would have a different view of communism and freedom fighters.

Did you see the comments on that forum..
Almost makes this one look tame .

What Forum? I really don't know why there are this many Mandela forums when it's the same thing in everyone. Also, you asked for a republican, and I gave you one.

Which is why you should never put stock in the comments section of any website that allows them. Generally populated by the worst the internet has to offer.

I'm really surprised by the unmitigated hate coming from the military guys on here, not you of course..
I guess I don't remember when Mao and Stalin died..Did they get it this bad ?

There wasn't an internet back then. Stalin died in 1953 and Khrushchev took over for him. I was a bit young in 53 and don't remember anything about it really. Mao died in 1976 and I was in Thailand getting ready to come back to the states. I don't remember any big thing about it although we had established diplomatic relations with Red China by then.

All I can say it was different times and different eras.

That's interesting. So you hate Nelson Mandela because of the North Koreans?

In all seriousness, I get what you're saying. Mandela was a communist, and I don't deny that. But you must see that he wasn't supporting the Soviet Union. And also, he saw that he was wrong obviously, else there would be a communist dictatorship in South Africa right now.

Also, these two men were monsters, probably the biggest of the 20th Century. We're talking about a combined death total of somewhere between 85-135 million people. Can we please not bring up these two guys anywhere near Nelson Mandela?

And I liked you for doing it, even though GWB is not a current politician..
I find the criticism of Ted Cruz from Kobie's link beyond telling over what the GOP faces in coming together..
I would venture that other GOP pols will be gunshy to praise Mandela .

Then why the outrage over Mandela??
Time to lay it at the doorstep of the internet and how far we have sunk as a society .

The Cold War never ended for some people. And one "communist" is apparently indistinguishable from another.

If your description of your grandfather's activities is accurate, then he was no freedom fighter at all, but nothing better than a common murderous criminal. I probably misspoke when I referred to him as a terrorist and a war criminal. He may have claimed a political “freedom-fighting” motive for his activities, but in the end, all he was is someone who murdered innocent noncombatants, and stole their property.

For the purposes of weakening a totalitarian power and facilitate the movement of people like himself across Poland. The logic you use is absolutist and fatally constricting. It is music to the ears of tyrants.

You know, in a broader sort of way, this is sort of indicative of a problem in American Politics. Everything has become so emotionally driven, so angry. I just got done watching an exchange between Rice Prebus and Sgt. Shultz and you could just tell how much they hated each other. There was no respect between them. In the past, there have been passionate arguments sure, but not to the point where you don't even listen. That's where I think Obama's biggest issue is, he's in the middle of it, when he should be above the noise and serving as a CEO. And none of the candidates I've seen have what it takes to unite the country, to be a trancedant leader... we really need someone crazy like Churchill or Lincoln.

When did Mandela commit terrorism and murder?

You are literally ignoring reality.

He never condoned or supported necklacing and he never advocated the killing of innocents, before he went to prison the ANC only committed acts of sabotage.

That's already been more than adequately refuted several times in this thread.

How old are you or should I be asking how young ?

In all likelihood I'm younger than you.

And? Stuff from 24 years ago is still outdated, especially regarding information.

You're a vet, aren't you? When you were in Vietnam, wasn't up to date intel key to sorties? Or did you take off just assuming nothing had changed since the French had been there?

Christie may not be perfect, but no POTUS has been perfect..
Even as a retired teacher, I could still live with his anti-Union history..
There are plenty of good GOP VP's also, like Pence of IN .

What is the practical difference between murdering the farmers with a gun or a knife when they are sleeping and dropping bombs on them from a B17?

This is why we have to protect ourselves from the Libbos.

It doesn't matter. Don't play the age card.

According to the AP, Clinton, Bush the second and Obama are going to attend Mandela's funeral in South Africa.

Is that so you don't have to think and cause your brain to implode from the stress?

If I were a Republican and got to pick the VP for Christie it would be Susana Martinez of New Mexico.

Yep, and Bush the first would probably attend if he was healthy enough to do so.

I think your right. Mentioning of him makes me wonder about Jimmy Carter. I haven't heard a peep from him and come to think of it, we should have.
