This isnt a situation in which you get to use Mandelas death to defend Obama politically.

You never lived there I ****ING DID.

Crime is a problem in South Africa and ABSOLUTELY NO ONE IS SAYING IT ISN'T.

Most of it is black on black crime in the Townships that are a direct result of apartheid.

Lack of education, infrastructure in black areas as a direct result of apartheid.

Crime has been slowly but surely decreasing since 1994 but one thing is for sure, it is not Mandelas fault.

Why are you more outrage about crime that occurred after apartheid ended... then innocent blacks being gunned down by a murderous regime?

I thought you were one of those "freedom" people?

Although crime was bad, South Africa was free for all intents and purposes, crime committed by individuals as opposed to direct government murder of innocents?

I suppose when it's blacks being gunned down it's not as big a deal to you is it?
Well even you admit Mandela did nothing to better things in his country. Do you have your papers by the way? Kinda like Nazi Germany huh, don't leave the house without your papers.

    >" Today Nelson Mandela has passed away aged 95. White "Western" media particularly in the "five eyes" Anglo-Saxon grouping including Australia have for many years been waiting for this day, and finally it has arrived.

When the West refused to allow sanctions against Apartheid in South Africa and used to call Nelson Mandela a terrorist, Gaddafi was embracing him and funding his fight against Apartheid by training ANC fighters, arming them and paying for their education abroad.
Nelson Mandela always has been very reserved to call anyone “friend”, but repeatedly stated Gaddafi is his close friend:

Tripoli, May 18, 1990 (mathaba) ~ Nelson Mandela: “No country can claim to be the policeman of the world and no state can dictate to another what it should do. Those that yesterday were friends of our enemies have the gall today to tell me not to visit my brother Gaddafi. They are advising us to be ungrateful and forget our friends of the past.”...<

How long do you think it will take the rightists before they trash both Mandela and Obama in context..
Soon it will be that Obama is using Mandela as a distraction from PPACA,
as the GOPees have done with everything else that has happened since the government reopened..

As you said, fight fire with fire..Pre-emptively fight the attacks that you and I both know are coming..
And if I want to call it Obama/MandelaCare, I will..
I can be just as asinine as the rightists/Francoists going forth .

You have to be careful here because remember Iraq.. those "terrorists" that attacked US troops, were no different than Washington. Only difference is that their power of their weapons.

Look I understand you want to defend your nations founder and sanctify him.. your people have been doing that for almost 300 years, but that is because you were the victor. Had Washington lost, he would have gone down as a rebel scum traitor terrorist... that is the difference.

I "understand," Pete, that you gleefully try to tear down all things American, and it's a favorite hobby of yours.

But I already told you what the difference was:

He was not a civilian. He did not "target" civilians. He did not target areas where civilians congregate in order to sow fear. He battled the British Army with a uniformed, duly-constituted army of his own, and such duly-mustered militia under the rules of warfare which were customary at the time.

And no, he was never, ever considered a terrorist by the British.

You have no idea what you're talking about, but that's nothing new. If you insist on plodding forward with this sniveling ignorance, I can't stop you.

most of the things right wingers have said about him over the years I've been here have been absolute crap including what's in this thread.

And the fact they go after him over the creation of the militant wing of the ANC which was in direct response to the sharpville massacre (when some of them seem to want to start shooting at the government over bullet clip restrictions), and which in its beginnings we're simply acts of sabotage, yes some members murdered but after he went to prison and without his approval. Which is why along with members of the White Security forces, members of Umkhonto We Sizwe also went before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

I am South African, I was born in 1989, I grew up and went to public South African schools and my family owned many businesses during our time there and I am white.

I can tell you that South Africa is far from perfect, Mandela is far from perfect.

In his earliest days indeed he was a socialist, but when you look at the actions of his government when he actually came to power, they resemble NOTHING of what the original ANC charter was in the 60's namely nationalizing mines and banks etc. which never happened, never came close to happening and HE COULD HAVE DONE IT.

But his most important contributions to our country, namely the relative peace he brought was nothing short of a miracle, and while South Africa isn't perfect and still has far to go I know I grew up in a South Africa that was better with him than without him.

I am thankful that he lived and I am saddened that he died.

He achieved the impossible and freed a nation.

    Cry, the beloved country.
To the Left, OUR founders were a bunch of white, slave-owning, bigoted, rich men, but Mandela was a gentle and peaceful man. And you wonder why there is push-back.

To the best of my knowledge, Rumsfeld never considered or called Saddam Hussein a brother or named one of his nephews Saddam as Nelson Mandela named one of his nephews Qaddafi.

Glad to see the lessons of reconciliation that Mandela taught have been taken in by the DP community.
