Here in Nevada a couple of years back, McDonalds held a hiring event where over 3,000 applicants applied for stores. All fast food places have to do is hold such events to replace the people that walk off.

And... Automation. Many of these firms are looking into and beginning automation for ordering, paying and cooking. The only job that will be left is the person that gets the order together and hands the bag to the customer. This could cut the number of employees by as much as 80%. In other words, these people are trying to get 80% of their jobs replaced by computers.

I really like your point though. If a company has to pay $15.00 and hour, the work force available opens up to a hell of a lot of people that are dramatically more qualified and capable than the unskilled hoard that's trying to extort the companies now.

Maybe if they succeed, they will loose their jobs, get replaced by better people, and my damned order will be correct for once.

Now give me some support here before a certain someone tells me it's just my womanly job to do it!
You don't have to take that crap. Strike! I'm right behind you. Over here. No. Waaay back here. Just tell all involved that my refusal to support the powers of oppression are tacit support for you, and I will fight right down to the last smear of peanut butter. And tell those crumb crunchers that rent is going up, too.

If your "skill" is the ability to make a sandwich, operate a cash register, keep and area clean and dip frozen stuff in hot grease then you must stop and think "am I the best qualified person to do this job?". Once the pay rate is raised then the competition for those positions increases, attracting better skilled, more experienced and more dependable applicants. Will these first job seekers then be selected/retained, above those with more skills/education?

That makes no sense at all. If the current wage, often above the minimum wage, is able to attract (and retain) qualified workers then it is, by definition, sufficient.

I kind of hope they are successful so that I can ask for a raise. I only make $12.50, so if burger flippers get $15, someone who tests software should be worth at least as much...

Of course a lot of people that work these jobs still don't make enough to get off of public assistance. It could be a big relief on the welfare rolls.

Maybe you're right. Reduce their wages by 50 cents, that'll show em'

That respite from welfare rolls will be very short-lived. Understand, if foundational wages increase, the cost of all other things will eventually increase as a result - it only takes a little bit of time for the ripple through the economy to undo what has been done.
